A Rumson woman and her son narrowly escaped catastrophe Thursday when the car she was driving became trapped on the North Jersey Coast Line tracks in Little Silver, according to a report in the Asbury Park Press.
Both got safely away from the vehicle before it was hit by a train at the White Street grade crossing, the paper reported on its website.
The incident occurred shortly after noon, when the woman stopped her Ford Expedition in the crossing in traffic. The vehicle became trapped between the safety gates as a train approached, according to the report.
The pair, who were not identified by police, were able to leave the car before the crash and were unhurt, the Press reported. No train riders were hurt, either.
The SUV was destroyed, and clearing the scene delayed the train for at least an hour, according to the report.

Later that night, somewhere in Rumson, a phrase akin to "Luuucy! You got some splainin' to do!" was heard.
Scary stuff.
Oftentimes I've been in a line of traffic during a red light at the Bergen St. rail crossing. When there are 2 or 3 cars up by the light, I always stop before the tracks so I'm not stuck sitting on the tracks in death's way waiting for the light to change. To do anything else would be complete idiocy.
Inevitably, however, there's always some idiot behind me beeping his horn to get me to move up so he can get 15 feet closer to his destination. I wonder if this woman didn't get beeped at by some similar-minded jerk.
