IT’S CANGEMI & TYLER v. ZIPPRICH & LEWIS

Cangemi_votes_2_110607Grace Cangemi will try to make it two out of three in November, when she runs for a full-term council spot.

The Asbury Park Press says that Republicans Grace Cangemi and John Tyler will reprise their council candidacies from last November in this year’s race for Red Bank’s governing body.

Cangemi, who won a one-year term, and Tyler, who falied in his first bid for office, will face off against Democrats Ed Zipprich and board of education vice president Juanita Lewis.

The Press reports that those four had filed as today’s 4p primary filing deadline approached.

No seats presently held by members of the 4-2 Democratic majority are on this year’s ballot. So this one is the GOP’s to hold on or lose.

In her third campaign in three years, Cangemi will try to land a three-year position on the council. The other incumbent Republican, John Curley, is running for Monmouth County Freeholder, and has said he would not try for two offices at once.

Cangemi narrowly lost her first council bid, in 2006, but then was appointed to fill in after Kaye Ernst resigned barely two months later. Last November, she beat Zipprich, a member of the Historic Preservation Committee, 1,174 votes to 1,115, for the one-year balance of the Ernst term.

Tyler lost narrowly to Democrat Kathleen Horgan, now in her first year on the council.

  • I'm no political strategist, but wouldn't it help to have Councilman Curley resign, so John Tyler can be appointed now and run as an incumbent in November?

  • Hey, candidates, let's hear your ideas for making this town a better place!

  • Dan- I don't know if that technique works so well for the minority party. I believe filling a vacancy with someone from the same party is merely a courtesy. Moreover, the Democrats would likely drag their feet on the replacement making any later Tyler appointment nearly worthless at election time and giving them the entire summer to make mischief in Red Bank.

  • Mr. Tyler: When you ran last time, I did not know you or about your efforts, so I could not vote for you. Since then, I have read many of your posts on red bank green and am impressed by what you have to say. You can count on my vote in the next election. Good luck and Thanks.

  • Dan-
One clear advantage is that the Republicans could have used signs saying "reelect" both Grace and John if John were appointed.

  • What a surprise. A member of the McMenna Team and he's a petulant kid. Can't you think of a better approach, Robbie. Why not some direct personal insults of Mr. Tyler and Ms. Cangemi. It's worked for Eddie and Pat for years.

  • I dont know much about Tyler or Cangemi but anything is better than whats there now…you both have my vote.

  • Well, Zipprich and Lewis aren't on the council now, either, so maybe it would be worth looking at the candidates' positions on issues that matter to you.

  • Padrone-
There is nothing personal about my comments at all. If the past is any guide, I suspect the personal comments on this site over the election season will be aimed at the Democratic candidates. I look forward to your defense of Ed and Juanita when this occurs since you are obviously concerned about the tone of the debate.

Posted by: Robert Boyle on April 8, 2008 at 12:25 pm | Permalink
  • Mr. Boyle: of course your comments here are personal. Red Bank issues are taxes, parking, congestion, sloppy management of borough affairs, the budget, etc. The "elect"/"re-elect" issue was raised to claim cheating and lying on the part of (then) candidate Cangemi. I can't imagine anything more personal. And it was YOU who resurrected the issue 6 months after the fact. So what was your point, if not to attack the character of the Republican candidates before the campaign even begins?

And, as an aside, was it Mr. Curly or Ms. Cangemi who called two elected members of the council "bums"? Or was that your beloved party leader? And wasn't the current mayor standing five feet away, giving tacit agreement by not publicly decrying the boss's tantrum?

But I will happily take your challenge. Let's watch and see how it goes.

  • I wish Mr.Tyler good luck.
Mr.Tyler though lost the election, was still working for a better quality of life in Red Bank. I did not vote for him the last time But this time I definately will.

Posted by: Bruce on April 8, 2008 at 4:44 pm | Permalink
  • I couldn't find any instance of Councilman Curley using the word "bum," but here are a few of his epithets, culled from a quick search of RedBankGreen:
"minion" (a taxpayer who agreed with McKenna)
    “Boss Hogg” (McKenna)
"cronies" (McKenna's relationship to Republican Freeholders)
    "puppet" (DuPont's relationship to McKenna)
    "flunkies" (borough employees)

I think Curley certainly took more insults from McKenna than he gave, but he's not exactly Mr. Manners.

Councilwoman Cangemi seems to conduct herself with more decorum.

I could not find any of the personal insults which Padrone alleges that Menna leveled at Tyler and Cangemi. I don't even see any insults from McKenna to Tyler, though I certainly believe he would hurl some, given the opportunity.

Neither Zipprich nor Boyle called Cangemi a cheat or a liar. Her campaign signs were false, and Zipprich wanted her penalized for it. Of course it was a political ploy on Zipprich's part, but I wouldn't call it a personal attack.

Posted by: Dan on April 8, 2008 at 4:57 pm | Permalink
  • I think Dan that Padrone was referring to Mckenna with the Bum comment, and that Mayor Menna stood close by and didn't offer any argument or attempt to defray the piggish and boorish comments made by the Ex Mayor. But I do also agree that John Curley has said his fair share.
Regardless, I shall offer all of the assistance that I can to both Cangemi and Tyler, and hope that it doesn't become the seedy crap tale that past administrations have let free.
Grace has done a very good job since her appointment, and I hope that she gets re elected, and as for Mr. Tyler, he showed exceptionally last time out, and now that people have seen how much he cares about the town and the quality of life issues that we face, I expect another several hundred voters plus to side with him.
John and his west side army, he is going to be a very good and loud voice for the people, a very good voice indeed.

Posted by: gary morris on April 8, 2008 at 7:16 pm | Permalink
  • I agree with you on Cangemi and Tyler. They're both doing a great job for this town. Zipprich lost some points with me for the "re-elect" flap, but he seems to be one of the only people trying to actually make the centennial into something. I don't know Juanita Lewis' positions on any of the issues, so I'll have to wait and see…. I give a lot of credit to anyone willing to serve on the school board in this town.

Posted by: Dan on April 8, 2008 at 7:25 pm | Permalink
  • Let me make something very clear, Dan. "Fair and balanced" doesn't interest me one bit when it comes to Red Bank politics. The McMenna team has some 20 years in the saddle and I don't like the results; I don't like their fiscal policy (or lack of one); I don't like the arrogant attitude which pervades the council and some of the chief bureaucrats in town.

None of this means R's are good and D's are bad. It means, right now, unless you see a viable third-party candidate coming forward, the only way to get rid of the McMenna approach to governing lies with the Republican candidates. And that's far more important to me than an academic analysis of who said what about whom.

p.s. Zipprich did call Grace a liar. Accusing someone of making false statements is the very definition of lying. And Boyle's sarcastic reference to this 6 month old non-issue is clearly the first mud of the 2008 campaign. That, in case you missed it, was my point.

Posted by: Padrone on April 9, 2008 at 6:07 am | Permalink
  • Padrone,

Actually, the mud started a couple of posts earlier, when John suggested that the council would drag their feet on a replacement for Curley, and that they would make mischief all summer.

The council was pretty quick in appointing Cangemi to replace Ernst, so it seems a baseless claim, but you didn't jump on it. Why is that?

Zipprich filed a claim that something on Cangemi's signs was false and misleading and would get her votes unfairly. That's not the same as calling someone a liar. Nor is it personal. She did something wrong in a political campaign, and her opponent called her on it. It's political, not personal.

If you don't want to talk about who's insulting who, then don't bring it up. If you don't like the stand that the Dems take on the issues, then talk about that.

Don't throw up accusations, and then when you get called on it, say that isn't what you wanted to talk about.

  • i don't think it's something that code enforcement deals with, but i would like to know if anything is being done with the overwhelming amount cars with out of state plates. i had hoped that when corzine signed the law in 2007 that the numbers would begin to diminish. i am extremely concerned that if cars are not properly registered in nj that they are also not insured. in nj, you must have insurance in order to register your car. it is my understanding that in many states shown on the plates that we see in red bank, you do not need insurance to have the car registered in that state. and, of course, the more uninsured accidents the more everyone's insurance rates will rise. does anyone know if this law is actually being enforced in red bank?

  • Gee Dan, your last post sounds a little snippy. We're only writing our opinions and you're still allowed to believe whatever you choose. But, because you're a good guy, I'll answer your one question directly. You ask why I didn't "jump on" the council's handling of Cangemi's original appointment.

First, because I agreed with what they did. And second, since I'm not interested in being "fair and balanced" as you seem to be, I'll "jump on" on who and what I please. I want to see every friend of Eddie's off the council. If that doesn't suit your sensibilities, go campaign for the Democrat ticket. If you think (as you suggest) that selling bunting makes Mr. Zipprich a candidate worth considering, that's your choice. A lot of people vote for much sillier reasons.

But please don't preach to me about how I must see the Red Bank political landscape.
I'm a partisan, anti-Eddie person. So you can spend your time researching Red Bank Green and analyzing the hell out of everything to see who insulted first, who insulted more, who outspent who and who was fair or unfair in their criticism. I prefer to work to oust the McMenna team.

  • three things, ) Linda B. It must have escaped your attention that there actually used to be a large amount of vehicles that had out of state plates (that number has diminished considerably), what is of more concern to me is how did the majority of these, I presume to be of illegal status get New Jersey License plates. have they found away around the 6 points, and are they now registered to vote? I ask this because my neighbors, who clearly cannot speak English (so one would imagine that they cannot read it also), have managed over the last two months to have ALL of their vehicles get NJ plates replacing the original Michigan, North Carolina and Texas that they had. A breach or flaw in the great motor vehicle offices perhaps.
    2) John, unfortunately I will not be able to attend, but I know that you will keep us updated on what transpires and will ask the questions that need to asked and answered, such as about our quality of life, crime against and within the neighborhood, prostitution, drug sales, neighborhood watch etcetera. You know, things that need we need to on top of.
    3) Eddie (any relation to past Mayor Eddie), please update us on your little shindig thing also

I'm hoping we'll hear from Ed Zipprich what they're up to now.

  • Over on the East Side, the Land Rovers have Vermont plates. I have always assumed it was for the same reason anyone else around here has out-of-state plates - to reduce the insurance burden. I don't know what the law is in Vermont, but it's probably not as stringent as NJ law regarding insurance. Doesn't make me happy to see these, but I'm sure nothing will be done to enforce the law on those cars.

Posted by: east side resident on April 9, 2008 at 10:05 pm | Permalink
  • gary, i'm glad that you notice a decrease in out of state plates. i really mean that. to me, it seems that there are just as many now as there were months ago. so, i hope that you are right and the numbers are decreasing.

but then you added another huge concern, which is how did undocumented people (i'm afraid to say "illegal" anymore) get nj plates?? i bet that some people that hire undocumented workers on a regular basis (housekeepers, child care, construction, etc…) helped by registering the cars in their names. this would also keep the insurance premium on these cars lower than normal because they would be listed as 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, …) cars on the policy.

it's so frustrating to me that being undocumented means that they get to play by a different set of rules then the rest of us.
