While federal wildlife hold off on trying to rescue a pod of dolphins that’s been in the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers for the past five months, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine has rescued a green sea turtle from the lower Shrewsbury, the Associated Press reports today.
The news comes a week after a report of a harbor seal’s appearance in the Shrewsbury near Monmouth Beach.
The AP says the turtle was spotted in the southern end of the river, where it dead-ends into marshland.
The stranding center took the turtle to its facility in Brigantine, and hopes to send it to a warmer climate by Friday, the AP reports.
The turtle appeared to be stunned by the cold, and was moving sluggishly when it was rescued, according to the report.
Last Friday, stranding center founder Bob Schoelkopf reported a harbor seal in the same vicinity. It was acting normally and appeared to be in good health, he said at the time.

Wow, so rescue only certain animals. We all understand that the Dolphins are smart; however, given that they are still here and that now 4 of them have died, isn't there something we can do to help them be moved before they all die. Just wondering if the stranding center has any plans to help assist the dolphins, or if they too think we should just leave them here and let nature take it course!!!!
How long are we going to keep saving Mother Nature from Mother Nature? We've spent years cleaning the rivers up of all the garbage we put in it. Isn't this the natural result?
Two different types of Dolphins a sea turtle and a seal all make it to the Shrewsbury river.
That seems odd. Whats going on and why shouldn't we let nature take its course?
They were all trying to get to Bruce's house for Halloween, and when they found out it was canceled, they didn't see any reason to go on.
I know nothing about either the dolphins or the seal. I do know that the turtle is named John, grew up in Rumson years ago, and was looking for Murphy's Tavern.
