ENVIRO-PIZZA BIZ EYES BROAD STREET

PizzafusionPizza Fusion plans to take over the vacant space at left and the storefront now being vacated by Sole Solution, right.

A Florida-based organic pizza chain that uses recycled Coke bottles in countertops and makes deliveries by hybrid car is planning to open in Red Bank.

Pizza Fusion, which uses the slogan “Saving the earth one pizza at a time,” has a deal pending with Downtown Investors LLC to lease 95 Broad Street, opposite St. James Church.

One of the two storefronts at that address is empty, last used by Computer Gallery; the other is being vacated by Sole Solution, which is in the process of moving to a freestanding building in Little Silver between Brave New World and the train station. (Sole Solution has already moved its well-known neon-trimmed-boot sign.)

Downtown Investors’ principal Jay Herman tells redbankgreen that Pizza Fusion will take the combined 2,500 square feet of space for its eat-in and take-out establishment.Rcsm2_010508

Plans for the change in use from dry goods retailing to a restaurant have been filed with the borough planning office.

Herman says the pending deal, combined with others such as the Urban Outfitters lease at 2-10 Broad Street announced this week, are evidence that “Red Bank is rebounding quicker, and better” than other towns that have been equally hard-hit bit the recession.

Pizza Fusion says on its website that it expects to open the restaurant in the third quarter. Of two dozen stores nationwide, the franchiser has one other New Jersey location, in Ridgewood, a Bergen County town to which Red Bank is frequently compared.

The company boasts of a 75-percent organic menu and buildings that are LEED certified. Herman says the building will be “completely” gutted and remodeled.

  • Acually that is still "Red Bank Pizza" and they still deliver to Red Bank although yes your right they are actually in Navasink or AH. Apparently a dispute with the landlord sent them packing not sure. Sorry to see Joe O go from Sole Solution I remember when his shop was on Monmouth ST Maybe he should have stayed there because the foot traffic was non existent in front of his high rent store on Broad St. Well now all the kids from RBC can hang out there as well God I hope its better food then Willies That what his "cheesesteaks" give me the willies Another pizza shop in town just what we need….. Maybe we can get another Soup shop or hair salon or bank while were at it. Someone at the Apple Store in Freehold told me they are looking to open another store in the area What a catch that would be for the town That would bring in real foot traffic and a lot of jobs They actually could afford the rent in town But it will probably end up in Seaview or somewhere else according to them. I wonder if "parking is a problem" for them Again why isnt the old Steinbach parking lot used for anything other then a few state cars ?

    —————

The Chiafullo family has made the best Neapolitan style thin-crust pizza in Monmouth Cty for 3 generations.
They started in Long Branch when brothers Nunzio Chiafullo & Tony Chiafullo (both deceased) opened stores across the street from each other, both were/are still successful.
Nunzio's Pizzeria, is now owned by son and daughter, Louis Chiafullo & Veronica Falivene.
Tony's Family Restaurant, is now owned by widow Etta Chiafullo.

Nunzio's son Johnny and his wife Joyce opened in Red Bank in a little storefront on lower Monmouth St. in 1960 and later bought a building and moved to Bridge Ave. Johnny died too young, many years ago, and Joyce continued running the business.
When Joyce succumbed to her battle with cancer in February, Red Bank Pizza closed it's doors for good. Sadly, another RB icon is gone.

Their son Bobby was instrumental in opening Chiafullo's Navesink Pizza on Hwy.36.
His web site states "While technically not under the same ownership, we are a direct family affiliate and have maintained the same wonderful Chef."
Being a customer since the original opening in 1960, I will greatly miss them.
But yes, they still will deliver to RB.

I for one, will not be frequenting Pizza Fusion, as I do not care what impact my pizza has on the environment. The only difference I want a pizza to make in my life, is to satisfy my taste buds with a good old-fashioned Italian pie!

You can view Chiafullo's menu at: http://www.chiafullos.com/index.html

  • LordJohnWarfen is greatly heartened by the heart felt pizza opinions expressed. I have been a frequent patron of Red Bank Pizza over the years. I will happily give the new proprietors a chance to earn my business.

If it is yummy for a good price the Warfen family will fee at that trough.

  • Bobby sold the building 4 years ago and rented it from the new owners who dont make pizza.
He sold the buisness to a scumbag who robbed him and took advantage of him as his mom was in a bad way.
Besides being the best pizza around, The Chiafullo's were, and are very kind people.
For a family that endured much tragedy and other personal disapointments through the years, they still were hard workers and a tight family who stayed in buisiness and served our town well.
They will always be the only pizza joint in town. The rest are O.K.,but RBP was the best.

  • Dear Excited Suzie and Red Bank Refugee,
You are welcome and because this new pizza place is so environment friendly it will not give you the willies. Sorry for the delay in answering you but I have been busy counting the collections. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the info Human fusion, I didn't realize Bobby was renting for 4 years.

I too have been a long time customer of RB Pizza…not sure how long but I remember a small plain was $1.25.

I don't like delivery but have made the trek from RB to Navesink. Maybe things will get worked out and we get RBP back in town.

Posted by: Robert on May 26, 2009 at 4:28 pm | Permalink
  • Bingo! while Joyce Chiafullo is no longer here with us her son Bobby continues to carry out the family pizza bussiness. (better yet restaurant bussiness) When you say Pizza you mean Chiafullo's Red Bank Pizza. Bobby isn't done yet I'm sure he'll be back in the area soon, but for now he is only a phone call away and no new Pizza Shop will compare to Chiafullos'. Mom's proud of you Bobby and she is always near, as all the customers know so well.

  • Pizzalover - " "75-percent organic menu"…. sounds awful. what happened to good old pizza? "

You obviously aren't educated on organics. You should be asking what happened to good old FOOD? Because what we've done to our planet's food over the last 20 years is frankly disgusting. From saturating crops with chemicals to genetically modifying plants with the genes from animals (even humans!), we've destroyed the old world farming practices of relying on good old fashioned nutrients to grow our food.

Organics IS good old food. Do yourself a favor and read up on it before you make claims about how organic food tastes. In fact, you'd probably be shocked to learn that organic food produces more natural sugars and nutrients than the chemically grown food of today.

Here are some links for you to read:

    - USDA Approves Rice Containing Human Genes - http://uspolitics.about.com/b/2007/03/07/usda-approves-rice-containing-human-genes.htm

    - From Lab to Lunch: Chemicals They Call Food - http://www.divinecaroline.com/article/22177/47505-lab-lunch–chemicals-food

    - Silicone–Based Chemical in Pizza Hut’s Cheese - http://www.themilkweed.com/Feature_06_Jan.pdf

So, I have to ask you… WHAT'S IN YOUR PIZZA?

I wish people would take the initiative to investigate the things they put into their bodies. There really is SO much wrong with the way we're feeding ourselves. It's the cause of disease, birth defects, and much more.

Thank God Pizza Fusion is coming here! I can't wait to support a pizzeria that pays a little extra for their ingredients to ensure my health.
