Just chiming in on the fate of the turtle. We did not release into the wetlands as stated but into a wooded area which box turtles seem to prefer. They are amazingly versatile animals and live in a wide variety of habitats from wooded swamps to dry, grassy fields. They like to venture into shallow water and puddles but are land turtles. They have a natural homing instinct which will cause them to try to return to their place of birth when moved so our hope is that he chooses a safer route back home than crossing the parkway again and we took that into consideration when placing him back into the wild.
