The state funds will pay overtime for additional traffic enforcement for one month.
Red Bank police expect to roll about 20 additional street patrol shifts this month under a state grant awarded yesterday, Capt. Darren McConnell tells redbankgreen.
The borough was one of 75 municipalities awarded a $4,000 grant under the state Division of Highway Safety’s new ‘Obey the Signs or Pay the Fines’ initiative to help local cops reduce common motor vehicle violations.
The idea behind the program is to boost driver awareness of violations such as failing to come to a full stop at an intersection, passing on the right, speeding and tailgating, says McConnell, who heads the department’s traffic safety division.
By having many towns throwing additional resources at enforcement simultaneously, “you get the synergistic effect,” McConnell says. “It’s better in terms of getting the message out to people.”
The grant will fund overtime for an estimated 20 patrol shifts over the course of the program, which begins today and runs through July 31, McConnell says.
Ocean Township and Freehold Township were the only other Monmouth County towns to also get the grants.
Here’s the full press release on the grant program.

It really amazes me what this town
enforces, or should I say what they
choose to enforce on any given day.
There are so many other bigger problems going on that the extra inforcement should be used for better use.
Red Bank better get their priorities
straight. Before it is really too late.
Get it together… Exactly continue to harass the local town folks and look the other way with the gangs and other serious goings on. It s just a way to fund the Dept to write more tickets for their coffers. Easy money & trust they will use it, so everyone be on your best behavior . Have you seen what a ticket cost these days ? I was in court a few weeks ago for a bogus parking ticket ( it was written up as an abandoned vehicle) For the most part its about a weeks pay or better for the avg Joe. What ever happened to the pedestrian snoop cops anyway ?
Overtime grants from the bankrupt state to a town to do an existing job?
What is wrong with these people in Trenton?
They are furlonging state workers and then passing out cash to towns to do expected police work.
Is NJ insane or what?
$4,000. what does that pay for two shifts?
We could use extra police presence on Drs James Parker Blvd. It seems that because a lot of people use our street only on their way to somewhere else, they believe that it is ok to speed on our street. There are many residences and many children on our street. Drs James Parker Blvd’s speed limit is 25 miles per hour.

P.S. - Sorry, forgot to tell you great post!
Cindy why that may be true I am sure there are dozens of streets in this town that have the same problem. I agree with Lord John, What the hell is going on with this state ? How about using the funds for some real crime fighting or DUI task forces? No pullover anybody with a tail lamp out and make their life a little more miserable.I already sent the heads up to a bunch of my friends to be very careful when coming into town Which isnt a bad thing but surely the funds could be better utilized. But dont worry the idiots that reside here will surely re elect our lame ass corrupt Governor again. Tax revenues are down and so of course so are resources from Trenton So lets just ticket tax everyone while we can nuf said happy 4th of July
Traffic violations are real crimes.
From the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/Motorvehiclesafety/index.html):
“In the United States, motor vehicle–related injuries are the leading cause of death for people ages 1–34, and nearly 5 million people sustain injuries that require an emergency department visit. The economic impact is also notable: motor vehicle crashes cost around $230 billion in 2000.”
About a third of vehicle fatalities are alcohol-related, so while DUI checkpoints are good, they won’t help prevent most fatalities.
They should absolutely post more police presence on Drs.James Parker Blvd. My daughter was on her way to work the other day and a person dropping his child off at daycare, threatened her, followed her into her office and continued to harass her there and had to be escorted out by the people who work in her office. I’m guessing the police know who this person is, given the description of his car.
Seems most of you are missing the point. All of your gripes are well founded, Red Bank should be applauded for applying for and accepting this (redistribution of your taxes) grant. No Fairy God Mother just picked our town for this award. This was applied for by the town and accepted. Grants come with conditions. The question should be what were the conditions of this grant. Why Red Bank? What case was made to justify this reward of our own tax dollars? Does anyone get this? Who will account for how these dollars are spent?
RBG should be asking these questions. Journalism is no longer practiced except when a reporter smells a rat. RBG NSL, APP, and all other media outlets that report stories like these should be asking why? Instead they rely on a press release from the politically appointed atty. generals office that suggests “synergies like these work” and just accept it
Where is the questioning of local officials as to why we are participating in this Grant. Who is asking what the accounting practices are to ensure this money is spent as intended? If local officials answer no comment enough, well then I think we will get the picture. Aside from the media this is also a fallout of one party rule. No dissenting voices. None of our council members asking questions just going with the flow. No checks and balances.
Like I said lots of reporters around not so many journalists. Very bad for a “democratic form” of government. I would pay for good Journalism if it was available.
Spending money from your broke aunt (state) is not an answer.
Until the state and our town operate the same way you run you finances, dollar in, dollar out they need to be voted out.
I think it’s fantastic that the city has dedicated this year’s fireworks display to the late great Billy Mays!
KABOOM!
Cops are doing a good job.
In times like we are in its easy to pick on the towns employees because they are visible and a target for scrutiny.
Fireworks were great though uh….
Bet you you dont know or care how much that cost you.
I cant wait to see the blotter next week to see how taxed the Police were for that fiscally impaired event.
