RUNAWAY CAR SMACKS SUPERMARKET ENTRY

A 19-year-old Middletown man “left a pretty good path of destruction” before crashing his car into an entrance of the Red Bank SuperFoodtown Friday night in an incident police say was a “miracle” in that no pedestrians were struck.

Police Captain Darren McConnell says that at about 7:46p, Kevin McGinnis, who was driving northbound on Broad Street (Route 35) from Shrewsbury, ran a red light at the intersection of Newman Springs Road, crossed the oncoming lane of traffic, drove through the vacant Key Motors lot, and then plowed through shrubbery separating that property from its neighbor.

His car continued through the supermarket parking lot before crashing into the building, blocking the southern entry and exit doors.

“Miraculously, his missed everyone,” McConnell said.

McGinnis did strike a sign and lamp post on the Key Motors lot, but didn’t hit any other vehicles, McConnell said.

Police believe McGinnis had a medical issue that prompted him to lose control of the vehicle. He was unhurt in the crash, but was taken to Riverview Medical Center to be checked out.

No charges have been filed, McConnell said.

Thank God no one was hurt. But should he really be driving?

Next time he or someone else might not be so lucky.

  • My mistake. The sentence should have said police believe McGinnis HAD a medical issue, not HAS a medical issue.

  • We went by Foodtown just before and after the accident. Still the last fragments of rush-hour were on the road. And I know what Foodtown can be like at that time on a Friday evening.

I had no idea about how the car ended up where it did. I assumed it was another Cluck U.

Glad to hear nobody was hurt. Lucky.

  • My sister had her first seizure at age 39. She had no early indicators of what was about to happen to her and doesn’t remember that or the subsequent seizures she has suffered. Thank god she was not behind the wheel. I know that with the Fair haven situation and our infamous ex-mayor’s incidents it is easy to be suspect. Shit does happen folks. This poor bastard may be reading your garbage comments while dealing with a very serious slam to his young life that he didn’t ask for.

  • Notesureanymore,

Who here implicated anything of wrongdoing for this kid? No one. Yes, some ‘off-color’ remarks, I think slanted at the Fair Haven incident which should have been reserved for that blog, but not this kid. I hope he recovers. I know what it’s like. I have a condition, and fear all the time something like this happening behind the wheel. Thank God it has not so far, but I live with that fear. As I am sure this poor guy will too the rest of his life everytime he gets behind the wheel.
