FAIR HAVENITE NABBED FOR BREAK-INS

police-blotter-smallA 19-year-old Fair Haven man was in custody after admitting to a spree of burglaries early Tuesday morning in Colts Neck and Tinton Falls, according to the Asbury Park Press.

In addition, Carl Vonpier faces a charge of false reporting after telling Colts Neck police that he’d been forced at gunpoint to participate in a break-in at the Colts Neck Shopping Center, where cops had caught him with tools and a fake gun.

His claim triggered a manhunt — one involving a helicopter and search dogs — for a suspect who, police say did not exist according to the Press account.

From the Press:

Sgt. Kevin Walsh was on a routine patrol when he discovered what appeared to be a burglary in process at a business in the Colts Neck Shopping Center on Route 34 around 1:40 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Colts Neck Police Detective Sgt. Joseph Whitehead.

Walsh found a man identified as Carl Vonpier, 19, in possession of an imitation handgun, two knives, tools and what appeared to be the proceeds of several other burglaries.

In his initial interview, Vonpier told Walsh he was threatened at gunpoint by a 17-year-old whom he said forced him to assist in a burglary, sparking a manhunt by police from Colts Neck, Freehold Borough, Tinton Falls, a Holmdel K-9 Unit, and a New Jersey State Police helicopter, Whitehead said.

Vonpier provided police with a name for the juvenile and told police the boy was armed with a 9mm handgun when he fled the scene prior to their arrival, Whitehead explained.

Vonpier was carrying an imitation handgun at the time of his arrest described as a black semiautomatic with a clip, weighted, made of metal and plastic, but with no red safety tip on front, Whitehead said.

Under additional questioning, Vonpier eventually confessed to police there was no other accomplice and he made a false report, and also admitted to the burglary there and several car burglaries in Tinton Falls earlier in the night, Whitehead said.

Vonpier was charged with a total of 12 counts, including burglary, attempted burglary, criminal mischief, possession of stolen property, possession of two knives for unlawful purpose, possession of an imitation firearm, possession of burglary tools, false reporting. Bail was set at $90,000, and additional charges are pending in Tinton Falls, Whitehead said.

  • I find this news very sad. I met Carl 5 years ago when he was a sweet, albeit goofy, 15 year old kid. I don’t know what has happened to him since then. Those of you commenting that he’s “just another rich kid from Rumson” and “what didn’t daddy’s Wall St bonus not cover”…He lives in a VERY modest house in a VERY modest section of Fair Haven (yes, there are still some modest areas left there). His parents are nice people. Despite our best attempts, sometimes kids do stupid things (and this was incredibly stupid) and make bad choices. My condolences to his mother.

Posted by: Catherine Conroy on July 29, 2010 at 7:11 am | Permalink
  • No, his Mother should not be given condolences!! No one died here. The Mother should be ripped just as badly as the kid as per the posts on this website for obviously doing a piss poor job of raising her kid. Clearly something went wrong here.
Your attitude in your reply is exactly what’s wrong with America today. No accountability or responsibility accepted. And feeling just as bad for the perps if not more so than the victims!

The comment about a crime being committed somewhere else besides the West side is just another race baiter statement. Get over it will you ? Before someone decides to throw and avalanche of statistics at you for you to chew on . It was reported. Isnt that good enough for you ?.. Guess not.. Your myopic views are what keeps race relations where they are at. Why is always about race ?? A crime is a crime and believe it or not the police try and treat them all the same way.It appears in your world view they would have rather let him go.. pathetic

Broke Into and Robbed. We are the true victims of his so called

What kind of parents allow there 19 year old to live at home

If you have been to his my space sight you could see he was heading in the wrong direction. Where were his parents then? It was as plain as

Don’t feel bad for parents that burry their head in the sand and
not take personal responsibility for the own off spring actions before they go this far ! The true victims are the people who’s lives he turned up side down, that Never did or said a bad thing to him.

  • I know who he is, and he wasn’t quite all there, but to go ahead and make over stereotypical comments about his parents not being there, or the whole “daddy didnt pay for a new car” is just stupid.

Before you post anything, how about you actually understand that not everybody from Rumson-Fair Haven is rich, and many people i know and go to school with don’t have the luxuries that every other town seems to think that we’re so stuck up about. Sure there is money, but not EVERYONE has it.

As for the owner of the business a few posts up, quick jumping ahead to make assumptions. He’s 19, he graduated HIGH SCHOOL a month ago, i don’t know of many kids who move out RIGHT after high school. And you think kids let their parents see their myspace? I understand that life is so much about money, but don’t comment about things you don’t have any knowledge of.

I don’t in any way feel that he shouldnt get what he deserves and that his actions were stupid, but the mass amounts of comments from people who don’t know enough about anything to comment and immediately hate piss me off

  • asdf, get your head out your behind, do the World a favor.
You are so off point attacking the business owner. Think he asked for this screw up to walk into his store and rob him?
You’re right, we may not know every little detail about this kids life. But anyone who robs a store IS a screw up, period. You dont need the details of the ’sob story’ to know that. If it looks and stinks like poo poo, well it is poo poo.
Also, I as a kid had an after school and summer job since the age of 16. And therefore had the same one to go right into the summer after I graduated HS. It taught me the value of a dollar and kept me off the streets. Also, age 19, and just graduated HS? Seems a little late to be graduating HS. Sounds like maybe he took the 5 or 6 yr program.
Age 19, whether you just graduated or not, you should be working, doing something constructive with your life. Not robbing stores.

Let me expand on what I said earlier: I’m not defending this kid. He should be punished for whatever crimes he committed. Unemployment is no excuse for committing crime.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

    Also,

    1) I know plenty of people out of work (we have 14 million of them to pick from), and they are not robbing stores
    2) My stat was geared to college grads, not a 19 yr old who probably took a year or two longer to graduate then he should have. Again confirming he is just a plain old screw up.

  • This is coming from someone who grew up with Carl, was in his graduating class, and knew him his entire life. Carl was a great kid and a really good friend, those who are implying that everyone in Fair Haven is rich clearly don’t know half the people who live there, and really need to learn some background on people before they say a word about them.
Carl was a good kid and never gave me a hard time in high-school, in fact he helped me out more then once. Those given condolences to his family, his mother was a jerk, she was very kind to her youngest son and very unkind to Carl, he was treated as a black sheep and I personally think that this stupid incident was more than a little bit her fault.
People were jerks to Carl for reasons beyond his control… Really, you guys need to grow up and stop ripping him to shreds.
Neighborhood Dummy… your title on here really does suggest everything about you, and thats all I will say about that.

Posted by: Sawyer on August 3, 2010 at 6:47 pm | Permalink
  • Sawyer, your picking a fight with the wrong one here. Read my posts more carefully. My main point was total disgust with people writing in here and giving condolences to his family. Acting as if they were the victims here. Clear misplaced perpetrator vs victim. That his Mother must have done something wrong with raising her kid. And then I got attacked for that.
Then ironically, you write in right above stating the Mother was a jerk, treated him like a black sheep, etc. Exactly supporting 100% what I’ve been saying all along on this blog.
So tell me then, what’s the beef then??? Just lookin’ to start some ’stuff’ or blow off some steam? I’ve seen some funny and ridiculous posts, but having someone agree with what I’ve been saying, and then still attack….that’s a new one!

Also, read my later posts, I recanted my first statement partially, saying correct, not EVERYONE is rich from these towns, but in towns with high median home values (like FH, Rumson, and Little Silver), chances are good that it’s someone with money. Certainly much more likely than lets say a town like Neptune, Freehold, etc….

Posted by: Neighborhood Dummy on August 4, 2010 at 8:11 am | Permalink
  • Dan,
This is the one issue with mediums such as internet blogs and e-mail. How can you really tell what is anger?
As for you, I see someone who is trying to incite anger all the time on these blogs, spitting out meaningless stats, to try to prove points that I think you know are ridiculous. I’ve said in another post somewhere recently, you strike me as probably a fairly bright individual. Which makes some of your claims supported by these meaningless stats all the more baffling. It almost seems you are just arguing points for the sake of arguing at times.
As far as anger for me, I think its more disgust and sadness for how I see many people are like these days, as even further supported by some of the bloggers (like this teenage punk telling me not to post anymore…kid, it’s a free Country).

I do acknowledge that there was something of a change in the past couple years, but honestly I dont think tying Carl to EVERY BURGLARY or DAMAGING CRIME for the past three years is a realistic, legitimate, or feasible idea.

Oh also, on a more relaxed note, half of your posts are reminiscent of http://www.somethingawful.com/flash/shmorky/babby.swf , now I’m not saying my grammar or sentence structure is perfect, but really… read over your posts, you’re all adults. (presumably)
Almost feels like everyone is blaming him for the break ins over the course of the past two years, when I dont think this began until this summer…

If you feel the need to watch me for being informed, or for the people who I maintained relationships with (if not as a close friend, then as a person who I tried to check up on occasionally) then really, you’re a creep, and as (I’m assuming) you are an adult, and I am a teen, that just makes it that much worse.

Are you trying to instill a fear of the government or the Law in me? Is that how we’re raising our children now? I’ll keep that in mind, first note for me to put down, dont respect my children or the people they go to school with, bully them into accepting the values desired by our society, got it, message received, good luck with your future of apparently stalking me.

  • Wow, quite the ‘Drama’ King or Queen you are. Merely asking, how do you know so much about the when and where of all these burglaries? You never did answer that, other than saying you are ‘up on community’ affairs.
You then took a drama fit and turned this into accusations of stalking, etc.
    WOW.
Also a question. What is a teen doing on here blogging? Do Mom and Dad know this? And also, advice, not too smart stating you are a teen. That can be dangerous in this World we live in today.
Your Creepy Friend…’The Eyes are Watchin’…spooooooooooooooky!!!

  • Oh my gosh, an 18 year old on the internet?! WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TOO?!

  • So you are an adult Sawyer. Cannot play both sides of the coin. Don’t accuse me of being a ‘creepy’ adult picking on a minor. You just stated legally you are an adult. Welcome to the real World kiddo.
p.s. review your prior posts before shooting from the hip, that your story is consistent. Not I am a teen in one, and then I am 18 in another.
