A welcome-to-Fair Haven sign on River Road was smashed in half last weekend in what Police Chief Darryl Breckenridge says was an act of vandalism.
The remains of the sign, which features the borough’s seal depicting the steamship Albertina, were removed Wednesday. A police report was filed with the department, but there are no suspects just yet, he said.
“It looks like somebody took an object and beat it up,” Breckenridge said. “Hopefully we can catch them and make them pay to fix it, or we’ll have to replace it real soon.”
Mayor Mike Halfacre said the borough will file an insurance claim to replace the sign.
The sign was near the Red Bank border. There are four others in town, planted on major streets where Fair Haven butts up against its neighbor, Rumson. They were initially installed when Halfacre took office three years ago, he said.
“We’re definitely going to replace it,” Halfacre said. “I’m assuming it’s going to take a few weeks.”
