A Fair Haven home was burglarized as its occupants slept in the early morning hours Tuesday, police said Friday.
The burglar entered a Woodland Avenue home through an unlocked first-floor window and made off with household electronics, which the residents discovered missing when they awoke, police Detective Stephen Schneider tells redbankgreen.
About six hours after receiving the report, Schneider, along with Oceanport cops, arrested a suspect, identified as Jeffery Hayet, 22, at his Oceanport home.
While in custody, Hayet tried to escape and assaulted a police officer, Schneider said.
Schneider said the arrest was the result of “technology and investigation,” but did not elaborate.
In addition, a second Woodland Avenue homeowner later reported an attempted burglary that is believed to have occurred within hours of the first, Schneider said.
Hayet was charged with burglary, theft, possession of stolen property, aggravated assault on a police officer and attempting to escape custody. He was ordered held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold on $75,000 bail.
Schneider said the investigation is continuing, and anyone with any information should contact him at 732-747-0241 x331.
