Can you beat this: shopping for fresh Jersey corn, tomatoes, blackberries and more, just yards from Atlantic Ocean, in summer?
With an OK from the Sea Bright borough council this week, a group called Community Green Market Organizers begins a weekly farmers’ market in the borough parking lot Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m.
Liz Murno, who launched the concept with Christine Gizzi Giaimo and Pamela Caputo, tells redbankgreen‘s PieHole food page that he market was born of the trio’s disaster-recovery work in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
“The three of us are committed to sustainable agriculture and post-disaster rebuilding,” Murno says, and the two objectives “go hand-in-hand” with a farmers’ market because it will bring in shoppers who might check out downtown shops and restaurants.
At the outset, the market will have four or five vendors, with more coming next week. All have been asked to sell only what they’ve grown or acquired from farms in New Jersey or within 50 miles of the Garden State.
In addition to fruits and vegetables, the market also features breads and cheeses, jams, fresh flowers and “freshly grilled, organic, grass-fed hamburgers and hotdogs,” according to promo material.
