RED BANK: WHO’S UP FOR BASIE AWARDS?

amadeus-davis-bush-pat-monaghan-1240804It’s Red Bank’s own homegrown answer to the Tonys, the Obies, and any other major accolade for live stage performance. What else but the BASIES, the awards that honor tomorrow’s talents today — or rather this Wednesday, May 18, when the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank once again celebrates excellence in dramatic and musical productions among Monmouth County high schools, with the presentation of the 11th annual Basie Awards.

Established by the education arm of the Count Basie Theatre Foundation, it’s an arena in which more than a dozen local public, private and parochial facilities compete, with the schools of the Greater Red Bank Green — including Red Bank Regional, Red Bank Catholic, Rumson-Fair Haven Regional, Middletown South, Mater Dei Prep and Christian Brothers Academy — once more dominating the balloting in the 2016 nominations.

Leading the field with 18 separate nominations is Red Bank Catholic High School, with a total of 11 nominations for the Disney musical The Little Mermaid, and seven for the collection of quirky comic one-acts A Night of Christopher Durang.

It was another strong showing for Middletown High School South, where the area’s first-ever school production of American Idiot (the surprise hit musical adapted from the album by punk-pop band Green Day) garnered nine nods in a variety of cast, crew and creative categories. The MHS South dramatic production of The Diary of Anne Frank scored another seven nominations, for a school total of 16.

Following close behind with 11 total nominations is Middletown’s Mater Dei Prep, with three productions — You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Perfect Meetings, and the school’s own staging of The Little Mermaid — balloting for major honors.

Home to the highly regarded Visual and Performing Arts Academy, Red Bank Regional High School earned a total of six Basie nominations — five of them for the dramatic production of Peter Shaffer’s Mozart meditation Amadeus, and one for Luke Pearlberg’s portrayal of Tevye in the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof.

The Tower Players of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School scored three nominations for the dramatic production The Faerie King’s Daughter, and one for the musical Bonnie and Clyde. Lincroft’s Christian Brothers Academy garnered a pair of nominations, for the musical production The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Presented to “individuals who have dedicated their lives to making art happen and art that matters in our community,” the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2016 will be presented to Yvonne Lamb-Scudiery, director of the Count Basie Theatre’s Education department and founder of its Performing Arts Academy.

Also recognized at Wednesday night’s event will be the winners of the Count Basie Theatre’s annual Arts Impacts Scholarships, a program that “recognizes high school seniors whose life, academic, and career choice has been impacted by the arts.” This year’s recipients include Paulina Homiak of Middletown South (Siciliano Landscape Company Scholarship); Jacob Wahba of Ranney School (Moser Taboada Scholarship); Shannon Corsi of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional (Monmouth Medical Center/ Barnabas Health Scholarship), and Cassi Zappala of Middletown North (Monmouth County Freeholders Basie Scholarship for Continuing Education).

Tickets for the 7 p.m. presentation ($20) are available here — and read on for a complete rundown of this year’s nominees.
