It’s an easily overlooked branch of the military, but the Civil Air Patrol, founded on the eve of Pearl Harbor, is still keeping its eyes to the ground and sky for the safety of Americans on their home turf.

Tonight, potential cadets aged 12 to 20 are invited to get a taste of Civil Air Patrol life at an open house at the U.S. Armed Forces Reserve Center in Lincroft.

Hosted by the Bayshore Composite Squadron, the event aims to give curious youngsters and their parents insight into the different aspects of what the program offers, from classes in physical training and aviation to search-and-rescue.

Captain Robert Cartwright, squadron commander, says that the program is the perfect way for adolescents to get a feel for the military and decide if it is a life path they want to take in the future.

“They take moral leadership and aerospace classes and essentially decide from here whether or not this is something they’d like to pursue,” Cartwright said. “But we don’t push the military. Moms don’t have to be afraid that we’re going to have their kid enlisted by the time they graduate high school. We simply guide them if they show an interest.”

Cadets do wear Air Force uniforms. CAP is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, providing emergency response and “diverse aviation and ground services” in support of localities, according to its website. It “handles 90 percent of inland search and rescue missions, with approximately 75 lives saved each year,” its commander writes.

Each cadet starts out as an Airman Basic and takes tests to get promoted all the way to Cadet Colonel, at which point he or she is authorized to teach classes.

“It adds discipline and structure in their lives, and teaches them self-confidence,” said Cartwright. “They learn military customs and courtesies, and it gives them focus. The shyest kids can end up running the show. They just come right out of their shell and it’s really awesome to see how the kids mature when they’re here.

“When you’re in this a long time and you see so many kids come through, you really see how it changes their life,” he said.

Tonight’s open house is the first of its kind, but if it’s successful, there may possibly be more in the future, Cartwright said.

The event is from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center at Newman Springs Road and Half Mile Road in Lincroft. And for those who miss it, CAP holds meetings every Wednesday at 7 p.m. that give a brief overview. This open house will be more in-depth, however.

The CAP was founded one week before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

CAP pilots flew over a half-million hours, were credited with sinking two enemy submarines, and rescued hundreds of crash survivors during WWII.

On January 31, 2012 at approximately 5:50 pm the Middletown Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Rite Aid Pharmacy located on Newman Springs Road in the Lincroft section of Middletown. Police say the suspect was described as a white male with a thin build between 5’08 and 6’00 tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a grey stripe on the front, large black framed sunglasses and dark colored pants.

Police say the suspect entered the pharmacy, lifted up his sweatshirt and exposed a black colored hand gun in his waistband and demanded Oxycodone pills. The suspect then fled the store and was last seen running behind the pharmacy.

 Police request anyone with information to contact Detective Daniel Sullivan of the Middletown Police Department at (732) 615-2255. The Rite Aid Pharmacy Loss Prevention Department is offering a $5,000.00 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect.

• The Middletown Police Department advises that it has received numerous reports of contractor’s work vans being broken into and a variety of hand tools and generators being taken from the vans. The thefts have occurred over a three week period. The police report that the suspects are either entering unlocked vans or smashing out a window in order to gain entry.

Police agencies in surrounding towns have reported experiencing similar thefts. The Middletown Police Department recommends parking these types of vehicles in a secure garage if possible or removing valuable tools if leaving these vehicles parked on the street.

Are you sitting down? If proximity to famous folk causes you to be a bit unsteady on your feet, be advised to exercise caution when parking your carcass at the Monmouth Museum this weekend — you might just be parking it on one of their objets d’art.

While the staff isn’t precisely promising a star-studded gala on Saturday afternoon, the Museum has traditionally used the generally dreary midsection of January to bring out the colorfully creative side of a wide range of people — including  occasional armchair artists from the worlds of sports, entertainment, broadcasting or politics.

The occasion is the 33rd annual appearance of the Museum’s Juried Exhibition, a who’s-who of regional painters, sculptors, photographers, illustrators and crafters that kicks off with a free opening reception between 4 and 6 p.m. on January 14 — and continues during regular hours throughout the gallery areas of the Museum (on the Lincroft campus of Brookdale Community College) through February 26.

Concurrent with the debut of the exhibition — judged this year by noted art dealer Island Weiss (of Manhattan’s Island Weiss Gallery) — is the sixth annual roll-out of Chairish The Museum, a fundraising vehicle in which dozens of artists and artisans are invited to design, decorate (or, in the case of some of the participating celebs, happily autograph) a chair, to be displayed both at the museum and at numerous other Monmouth County shops and galleries through February 8.

The whimsical, wild and wacky chairs — all of them offered for sale as way of furnishing revenue for the ongoing programs at the museum — will be moved to Lincroft on Saturday, February 10 for a silent auction that begins at 6 p.m. (and for which the $10 admission price can be applied to any chair purchase).

• On January 6, 2012 Detective Daniel Sullivan arrested a 17 year old male juvenile from Colts Neck, NJ, and a 17 year old male juvenile from Holmdel, NJ after they attempted to rob the BP Gas Station located on Newman Springs Road in Lincroft, NJ. Police say the pair were wearing ski masks and were armed with a hammer and a BB handgun when they attempted to rob the station at approximately 8:00pm Friday night.

Police say the suspects fled the station without getting any money after the attendant locked himself in the office and refused to let them in. The pair was observed running from the area and getting into a white van. The description of the van was given to surrounding police agencies and was located by Brookdale Community College Police Officers Craig Iacouzzi and Gabriel Campan a short while later.

The suspects were taken into custody without incident and were each charged with Robbery, Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Conspiracy. They were being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Facility.

• On December 28, 2011 Detective Adam Finck arrested Jose Luciano, age 32, from Reidway Place in Freehold, NJ, as a result of an investigation into a burglary at a residence on Cypress Neck Road in the Lincroft section of Middletown. Police say Luciano was identified after a witness observed him leaving the residence.

• Detective Daniel Sullivan arrested Brian Miller, age 21, from Walnut Avenue in Red Bank, NJ [EDITOR'S NOTE: This address, while in the 07701 Red Bank zip code, is actually in Middletown], for numerous counts of Theft by Deception as a result of a two month joint investigation conducted by the Middletown Police Department and the Trenton Office of the United States Secret Service into counterfeit twenty dollar bills that had been passed to numerous businesses throughout the area.

Police say Miller had passed the phony bills to businesses in Middletown, Holmdel, Atlantic Highlands, Fair Haven and Keansburg and had been charged by the police departments in those towns as well. He was released pending a court date.
