Answer to last week’s Where: those decorative panels showing arrow-dodging zebras are in the the front window of Silberstein Interior Designs on Broad Street (Route 35) in Shrewsbury.

Reader Susan McLaughlin shared some fun facts about the design:

The pattern was designed as wallpaper in the 1940s for Gino’s Restaurant in NYC. Iconic favorite for the stylish bathroom, which seems odd. Enjoyed such a resurgence when seen as Gwyneth Paltrow’s bathroom paper in The Royal Tenenbaums that Scalamandre couldn’t keep it in stock.

By MARY ANN BOURBEAU

Looking to form a pickup hoops or softball game, but don’t have enough friends? Try Joinagame, a new social network for pickup sports based right here on the Green.

Launching today, Joinagame was built by Corey Wagner of Rumson and Patrick Finan of Fair Haven to handle all the pesky details, such as finding and reserving an available field or court.

But it also addresses a bigger hurdle: not knowing enough people who might be game for a game.

“Once you leave college, you lose your sports network,” said Wagner.

Wagner and Finan work with the recreation directors in Fair Haven, Little Silver, Red Bank, Rumson, Sea Bright and Shrewsbury, as well as Atlantic Highlands and Oceanport, to monitor availability of facilities. Once a person registers at Joinagame, he or she can sign up to play a game already formed online or start their own.

Sports offered are basketball, flag football, kickball, soccer, softball, tennis, Ultimate Frisbee and volleyball.

Joinagame is free, though some towns offer players the option of reserving a field for $40, which all the players would split via online payments. Joinagame takes care of all the paperwork, insurance and payments, making it a win-win for the players and the municipalities. The site will soon offer referees for hire, too.

“It’s free to register and we hope to keep it that way, covering our costs with advertising from sports merchandise stores or bars,” said Wagner.

Finan, 22, earned a finance degree from Providence College in Rhode Island, where he played intramural tennis, soccer, hockey and softball.

“Sports are a huge passion of mine,” he said.

But Joinagame isn’t just for the freshly minted grads. “I’ve seen a lot of parents who bring their kids to practice and say they miss being out there themselves,” he said.

Wagner, a 25-year-old construction worker, and Finan, who is currently waiting tables, met four years ago when Wagner began dating Finan’s sister Jennifer. They’ve spent the last five months creating the site.

Wagner says Joinagame works as well for avid players as it does for those who can only squeeze in a game or two a season.

“A pickup game is nice, because you can show up once,” he said. “You don’t have to commit to a league, and if you don’t mesh with the guys, you can get a whole different group next time.”

The key challenge to their roll-out, they said, is getting enough players on board from the outset so that games have enough players to commence. They spent a full day last week putting up fliers in area coffee shops, salons and other high-traffic businesses, and were pleased to find a lot of interest.

“I was surprised how quickly people picked up on the concept,” said Wagner. “We’re starting local to see how it goes, but we would like to do it for every town in the area.”

The reason? The borough’s court is pretty efficient all by itself, bringing in nearly $175,000 more than it spends on salaries and operating costs each year, town Administrator Stanley Sickels tells the Press.

Also, Red Bank “never heard back” from Fair Haven, Little Silver, Rumson and Shrewsbury about the proposal, Sickels said.

Menna aired the proposal last September as Matawan – where he was, and remains, the borough attorney – prepared to consolidate its court with those of Hazlet and Keyport.

At the time, Menna said a merged peninsula court would operate with one judge, one prosecutor, one public defender, one court administrator and one physical court space. The court, he said, could be more cost-effective than a shared service agreement, in which towns often use their own staff members rather than sharing with other boroughs.

A month later, Menna reported to the council that tone town had responded quickly and “very affirmatively,” partially reviewed by another. “The naysayers who said this couldn’t happen will be surprised.”

At a Tuesday night presentation on the Red Bank budget, however, Sickels said that “our numbers are so favorable to us, it doesn’t make sense. Our court is very efficient,” according to the Press.

The newspaper reports that Red Bank’s court earned $546,161 in revenue in 2011, and the proposed court budget for the current year allocates $373,402 for salaries and operating expenses.

She’s also in trouble in Shrewsbury.

After Highlands police picked her up on a warrant Wednesday, Rumson police charged Kimberly A. Campo with crimes arising from an early-morning car break-in last Thurday, police Chief Rich Tobias tells redbankgreen.

Two days later, Campo is alleged to have broken into five cars in the Sunnycrest and Silverwhite Road neighborhoods of Little Silver last Saturday, said Little Silver Detective Greg Oliva of that town.

Rumson charged Campo with burglary, three counts of forgery, and two counts of credit card theft, Tobias said. Additional charges are pending, he said.

In Little Silver, Campo was charged with five counts of burglary and three counts of theft. The burglaries were of unlocked cars, and occurred in the predawn hours, Oliva said. Taken were a wallet, an EZ Pass, cash and credit cards, which were used for purchases at local stores, he said.

Campo was also charged by Shrewsbury, authorities said. Details were not immediately unavailable about that case.

Campo was being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on $15,000 bail from Little Silver and $12,500 in the Rumson case.

The arrest followed a joint investigation involving detectives from Little Silver, Rumson and Shrewsbury.
“All the detectives were working together on this,” Tobias said.

The Woman’s Club of Red Bank and three historic structures in Shrewsbury are among the local nonprofits set to share in $71,200 in grants awarded by the Monmouth County Historical Commission, the county government announced Friday.

From the announcement:

“These grants support the great work being done by preservationists in the community,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the county Historical Commission. “These structures tie us to previous generations and help remind us that we must treasure and remember our roots and the people who built our communities. I take pride in the opportunity to give my support and the support of the entire Board of Chosen Freeholders as partners in preservation.”

The Historical Commission is dedicated to preserving the past and creating a living history. Projects eligible for funding are preservation, restoration or rehabilitation of historic structures – usually 50 years or older – that are accessible to the public. The program covers essentially structural work for projects commonly known as “bricks and mortar” undertakings.

“The preservation and restoration of historic structures make history real and present in our lives,” Burry said. “These grants are an essential part of what the county does. It is important to maintain and restore these landmarks to their glory and interpret their importance for generations to come.”

The Monmouth County Historical Commission was created by the Board of Chosen Freeholders for the preservation and conservation of Monmouth County history. Established in August 1988, its principal program is the preservation grants, an undertaking that recognizes the acute need for funds to preserve Monmouth County’s rich and diverse historic legacy. The commission grants matching funds on a competitive basis to municipalities and nonprofit organizations needing financial help in the preservation or restoration of historic structures.

“Recipients will receive a check for their projects upon completion of the work and the submission of the required paperwork,” said Randall Gabrielan, executive director of the Historical Commission.

Each grant application must include a description of the project, its meaning to history and the significance and the audience it serves. It must also include a detailed budget, a source of funding available for the applicant’s dollar-for-dollar contribution, detailed quotations for the work, the materials to be used and a time frame for completion.

There is a $500 minimum request per applicant in any year. The program is competitive and the commission requires proof of the availability of matching funds.

Each grantee is required to submit interim and final reports. The documents are to be accompanied by three photographs that detail project progress. The interim report is due when 50 percent of the work is completed. The final report, due at completion, must show evidence of completion and a canceled check to document payment to the contractor.

The deadline for applying for the preservation grants is Nov. 1 of every year. Information about the Historical Commission grant program can be found at www.visitmonmouth.com

For information about the county’s Historical Commission, email Gabrielan at monmouthhistory@comcast.net or by calling 732-431-7413. Additional information can be found on the county’s Web site at www.visitmonmouth.com.

The public can visit many of these sites during the Weekend in Old Monmouth tour May 5 and 6.

“Too obvious,” wrote Sandra Talarico, who along with 15 other readers identified its location as the Quaker Meeting House at the historic Four Corners in Shrewsbury – the intersection of Broad Street (Route 35) and Sycamore Avenue. (We had one incorrect answer: Hudson Street in Red Bank.)

“Thank you for an easy one that brings to an end our dry spell,” wrote Wheregulars Carl, Kathy Lou, Bob and Debbie Colmorgen, aka the Colmorgen Kids.

Here’s a little plug for the folks at the Shrewsbury Friends, a congregation whose roots date back to 1660, from their website:

We are an unprogrammed meeting; there is no set order of service. We wait in expectant silence; vocal messages are given as members and attenders are moved. Children attend for only the first fifteen to twenty minutes at which point they proceed to First Day School. Meeting for Worship lasts about one hour, and is concluded with the shaking of hands with those sitting nearby, followed by announcements of upcoming events. Also at this time, we introduce ourselves when visitors attend. Following Meeting for Worship there is an opportunity for fellowship. There is always coffee and tea and good conversation.
