Answer to last week’s Where: those decorative panels showing arrow-dodging zebras are in the the front window of Silberstein Interior Designs on Broad Street (Route 35) in Shrewsbury.

Reader Susan McLaughlin shared some fun facts about the design:

The pattern was designed as wallpaper in the 1940s for Gino’s Restaurant in NYC. Iconic favorite for the stylish bathroom, which seems odd. Enjoyed such a resurgence when seen as Gwyneth Paltrow’s bathroom paper in The Royal Tenenbaums that Scalamandre couldn’t keep it in stock.

Whoa, easy there, fella. If you smell meat, it’s only because we’ve just come from the butcher shop.

Citarella’s Meats & Deli, that is, on Prospect Avenue in Red Bank. That’s where we took last week’s Where, showing a wine press / cider press that’s on display on the sidewalk in front of the store.

The store’s website has a bit of compelling history to it. Though most of us know Citarella’s as the only remaining grocery on the town’s East Side, the business started as a storefront 101 years ago on Bridge Avenue, opposite the train station. And that was a full decade after Italian immigrant Andrew Citarella started “selling meats from his front porch.”

A second clue to last week’s Where Have I Seen This? didn’t keep some fans of this feature from going a bit astray.

One guessed it was taken at Prown’s Home Improvement on Monmouth Street. Another suggested “Page Photo Service (Matthew Page) located at 113 West Front Street, Red Bank” and added: “They had purchased the entire facilities of the Camera Shop formerly located in Carlton Theater building,” which is of course now the Count Basie Theatre.

But the rest of the 19 readers who wrote in got it right: Fantastic Signs on Shrewsbury Avenue in Red Bank, which has among many striking artifacts on display the old Dorn’s Photo Shop sign, saved when that Wallace Street shop was demolished to make way for the Metropolitan apartments.

The added clue, for those who missed it, was an excerpt of a 2008 redbankgreen article about Wallace Street being ceremonially renamed Dorn’s Way.

Thanks to all who wrote in: Robert Budnick, Kristofer Jones, Les Hathaway, Dustin Racioppi (who penned our 2011 feature about Fantastic Signs), Amanda Lynn, Yvonne MacDonald, Mike, the Colmorgen Kids, Fred Gill, Tom Cosgrove, Megan Prenderville, Sandra Talarico, Ken Kalada, Kevin Chieff, David Prown, Trish DePonti, Alan Fisher, Alicia Woods and Fantastic Signs owner John Oakley, who says “I think I peed a little” seeing his store featured here. And really, who wouldn’t?

Think you can identify the location of this week’s featured object? Squeeze out an email, please.

As for last week’s Where Have I Seen This….

Our photo showed a lane disappearing into woods, with a municipal-style street sign in red reading “Swain Lane.”

It may not require a super-sharp eye to know the location of the sign, which is on Ridge Road in Rumson, between Harding Place and Fair Haven Road, opposite Fair Haven Fields. And the red is a giveaway that it’s not a public street.

A bit of spatial reckoning is in order, though, because the address is on Rumson Road.

The sign is at the rear entrance of residential property listed as belonging to Kenneth Swain, whose house is nearly 2,000 feet away from the sign and fronts on Rumson Road, nearly opposite Rumson Country Club.

A lot connecting those two roads is a rarity these days, a vestige of the time when truly grand estates proliferated in Rumson. Do you know of any others? We were surprised that this one existed.

Thanks to all who wrote in: Mayor John Ekdahl, Louise Larsen, Heather Andersen, Frank Quagliariello, Wade Davis, Sandra Talarico, Patricia Quadarella and Phyllis Cronin.

The wall-embedded outboard motor shown in last week’s Where got some beanie propellers turning.

Two readers guessed Irwin Marine in Red Bank, but all others who wrote in had it right.

Correct answer: Angler’s Marina in Sea Bright. Or, as Scott Breslow and Jake Rue each put it, in response to our cheeky request for its coordinates:

Latitude N 40° 21′ 20″
Longitude W 73° 58′ 31″

In addition to Scott and Jake, we heard from Brian Phillips, Sean Cahill, Parker Trasborg, the Colmorgen Kids, Michael McMahon, Mark Rubin, John Larney, Scott Howard, Wade Davis, Lindsey Hintelmann, John Gibson, Jeff Snyder, Cliff Antell, Jeff Dalton, Sandra Talarico and Craig Widmaier, and we thank all for writing in.

One reader thought last week’s Where Have I Seen This?, which showed a lighted path and archway, was taken at the Soul Kitchen on Monmouth Street in Red Bank. Another guessed the Brave New World sportswear store in Little Silver. A third went with the Dublin House in Red Bank.

So three out of four who wrote in were off-course.

Correct answer: the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club, located on our beautiful Navesink River in Fair Haven – or, as the club’s website cheekily puts it, “located on the North Shrewsbury River commonly called the Navesink.”

The club’s history makes for an engaging read. The club was started a little more than a century ago by a bunch of vaudeville actors who earned the $250 needed to buy a houseboat clubhouse by putting on a show at the Frick Theater in Red Bank, it says. And for the first three decades, it was a “players only” club. Meaning actors. Male actors. Non-actors were not permitted as members until 1939, according to the account by club historian Mary T. Santry. Women were not permitted as members until 1995.

Thanks for writing in go out to Jackie Francisco Sapienza, Danielle Holter, Karen Irvine and Trish DePonti.

Last week’s photo showed some luscious greens in a raised vegetable bed. Did you recognize the location?

Our photo was taken in the Rumson Road, Little Silver front yard of Wendy Weiner, the Front Yard Farmer who we featured in these pixelated pages three years ago. Weiner’s agricultural skills are portable. For a fee, she’ll come to your home and teach you how to build raised beds and tend your own little front yard farm.

Weiner helped create the vegetable and herb garden out in front of the pay-what-you-can-or-lend-a-hand Soul Kitchen on Monmouth Street in Red Bank.

Writing in were Yvonne MacDonald, Maria Sciarrino, Alicia Woods and her daughter, Jenn Woods, Karen Irvine, Joseph T. Kenney, Paul Sperber, Jeffrey Knight, Jill Ridenour, Trish DePonti, Sandra Talarico, Anna V. Higgins, Jackie Francisco Sapienza and Danielle Holter. Nearly all of them had the location right, and we thank each of them for chiming in.

Does this week’s photo (click to enlarge) ring any bells? If you know where it was taken, drop us a line, please.
