piehole_cravingsWhen 23-year-old Shauna Harten gets a craving, it’s likely to be for Irish soda bread scones. And not just scones like those her mother used to make, but the genuine article.

When the Sea Bright resident was studying hospitality at Florida International University, she’d have her mom ship them down to her, she tells PieHole.

“My roommates really liked them, too,” she said. “They looked forward to the delivery almost as much as I did.”

120414 Alices2When Arlo Guthrie penned his famous “Alice’s Restaurant,” he didn’t have Alice Gaffney in mind: she was an ocean away from the scene of the Thanksgiving Day “massacree.” But that line, “you can get anything you want…” pretty much applies to Alice’s Kitchen, Gaffney’s restaurant in Sea Bright.

sb restrooms 051414A vexing shortage of parking in downtown Sea Bright is slated to ease with the unofficial start of summer Friday.

With merchants hoping the second summer after Hurricane Sandy is better than the first, part of the newly rebuilt municipal parking lot was expected to be open in time for the Memorial Day weekend, borough Engineer Jacki Flor told redbankgreen Thursday.

morsels mediumThis week’s warm weather found PieHole once again putting the top down on the convertible and zipping east towards Sea Bright for lunch. We noticed progress in the clearing and preparation of the town’s public beach parking lot. Last week‘s mountains of sand gave way to cement curbs and the semblance of a parking lot.

Neighbor and frequent PieHole lunch companion Brian McCourt joined us, and suggested we try Alice’s Kitchen.

SB 2 090113Summer 2013’s unofficial end was a relatively quiet one in the beach community of Sea Bright, thanks to gray skies.

Thanks to a reader tip, redbankgreen got to meet a group of 25-year old Canadian bicyclists who had stopped to camp in town Saturday night en route  from Montreal to Miami, a distance of about 1,700 miles.

“It’s a random trip, we’re just going down south,”  Maxime Boon said Sunday morning, as the quartet readied to depart.

All four men expressed strong gratitude for the hospitality of Sea Brighters.

“It was one of the best nights of our trip,” said Francois Bertrand Lemay. He recounted how it started with a half a case of beer from man in town who had biked long-distance when he was younger.

“We’ll be back for sure,” said Martin Hetu. “Keep on living the life, the dream life by the beach.”

The rain that he said with certainty was following him from Cape May held off, long enough at least for Governor Chris Christie to make a whirlwind tour of Sea Bright’s downtown Wednesday.

The latest in a handful of visits to the borough since Hurricane Sandy knocked out every one of its commercial establishments, the 90-minute tour gave Christie a chance to tout his administration’s storm recovery efforts, slam a couple of federal agencies, and glad-hand supporters as he runs for a second term.

Though “not everything is perfect by a longshot” with the Shore’s recovery and efforts to attract tourists this summer, “we’re laying the groundwork for next summer, when I know things are going to be significantly better here in Sea Bright and all up and down the Jersey Shore,” Christie said.

Wednesday’s Star-Ledger has a feature story about Joanne Garelli, the former co-owner of a Sea Bright luncheonette who’s turned the misfortune of Hurricane Sandy into opportunity.

Having lost Steve’s Breakfast & Lunch to the October 29, 2012 storm, Garelli recently headed up a three-person food truck that made its way across the United States as part of “The Great Food Truck Race,” a reality television series that starts its third season on the Food Network this Sunday night.

SEA BRIGHT: RISK-TAKERS FLOODING TOWN

Store by store, restaurant by restaurant, the old-timers are coming back to Sea Bright, a town where not one was spared the trauma of Hurricane Sandy.

From Angler’s Marina to Yumi, from Woody’s Ocean Grille to Northshore Menswear to Bain’s Hardware,  merchants have restarted their businesses as quickly as their bank balances would allow. Others are in the process of renovating. Expect Gracie & the Dudes to return shortly. Ditto for the the 7-Eleven.

But within this returning tide is a second wave: newcomers to Ocean Avenue business district. Risk-takers willing to stake their livelihoods, and their life savings, on the chance that the Shrewsbury River and the Atlantic Ocean won’t again meet in the places their renting. Not soon, at least.

The first time you visit Alice’s Kitchen in Sea Bright, order an Irish breakfast.

That’s on the recommendation of the chef and owner, Alice Gaffney, who’s bringing the food – and an architectural touch – of her homeland to 1100 Ocean Avenue, but doing it Jersey-style.

“We’re going to have Irish soda bread, Irish breakfast, and of course pork roll,” Gaffney tells redbankgreen. After all, “this is the Jersey Shore,” she says.
