Up for review at Monday night’s meeting of the Red Bank planning board: the Element, seen above, a 35-unit apartment complex proposed for a vacant lot at 55 West Front Street, opposite Riverside Gardens Park. The controversy-stirring plan could go to a final up-or-down vote.

A new round of hearings on the Element, a proposed 35-unit apartment building in downtown Red Bank, began Wednesday night with concerns raised about parking adequacy and aesthetics.

Mayor Pasquale Menna called the appearance of the structure “bulky and not very inviting,” while several residents challenged a traffic consultant’s claim that the project’s on-site parking was sufficient.

The borough council on Wednesday night began a process that could lead to the construction of the Element apartments on West Front Street, opposite Riverside Gardens Park, without the developer having to appeal the zoning board’s denial of last Thursday.

And the council was acting, said Mayor Pasquale Menna, on a request made by the developer less than 24 hours after the zoning board rejection.

The proposed structure — at 55 West Front Street, opposite Riverside Gardens Park — was shot down on a motion by presumptive Democratic council candidate Erik Yngstrom, who said it was too dense.

Dubbed the Element, the project would be built on an irregularly shaped, three-quarter-acre vacant lot facing Riverside Gardens Park at one end and White Street, alongside the former Liberty Hose firehouse, on the other.

SAWTOOTH ADDS CREATIVE BITE TO RED BANK

Red Bank got a double-barreled economic and creative infusion with the opening of Sawtooth Group‘s new headquarters in long-vacant space on West Front Street Monday.

Local officials and merchants expect the ad agency’s wholesale move of 60 employees from Woodbridge to the five-year-old Corporate Plaza complex, at the corner of Pearl Street, will give a jolt to downtown restaurants and stores.

But firm principal Kristie Bridges, of Rumson, tells redbankgreen there’s a third way in which Sawtooth hopes to make its presence felt: through volunteerism.

“We always wanted to be in a culturally rich town, with a sense of community,” she said. “We really feel we could get involved here and be inspired here.”

With the official arrival of summer and the much-anticipated winding down of the school year, thousands of area middle schoolers are fully willing and ready to slam shut the yearbook on the 2009-2010 session.

For a select group of local students, however, the middle school experience — complete with shifting alliances, weirdly morphing bodies and classroom politics — is ready to go another round. Beginning with an invitation-only dress rehearsal on Thursday and continuing with four performances through Sunday, a cast of 22 young actors and musicians will be taking the Two River Theater stage in Life in the Middle, an original rock musical that “looks at what it’s really like to be right in the middle,” courtesy of dialogue taken directly from middle schoolers.

With every one of the performers boasting his or her own home-grown fan club, it’s no wonder that the entire (expanded) schedule of shows sold out in a flash. But if director and co-author KJ Sanchez has her druthers, everyone in America will get a chance to catch this oral history-based project in the months and years to come.

It’s a delicate dance, this business of securing a primo parking space on the busiest blocks of downtown Red Bank. And at some point, chances are good it’s had you seeing red.

Make that Italian racing red — the primary color on display around the borough business district this Sunday afternoon, as upwards of 75 — that’s right, seventy-five — Ferrari “supercars” are scheduled to take part in an event the likes of which have never before been seen, even here in ever-upmarket Monmouth County.
