CHOWDA HOUSE TAKES RED BANK DOWN EAST

It’s been almost a year and a half since redbankgreen first reported that Mary and Roy Jennings were planning a new seafood eatery on Bridge Avenue in Red Bank.

Sine then, apparently, the couple have been battening down the hatches, as indicated by the extensive use of a shipboard motif in the dining room of the Chowda House, their new restaurant located directly opposite the train station. Even the restroom doors look like bulkhead passages to a ship’s engine room.

It’s an environment that chef Glenn Kovacs says reflects the well-thought-out details of the business, which opens Saturday.

“There’s nothing like this around here,” in terms of atmosphere or menu, says Kovacs, whose travels have landed him stints in kitchens throughout the metropolitan region.

And making its seventh annual stand, the Red Bank Guinness Oyster Festival returns to the White Street municipal parking lot Sunday for an event that, as the name suggests, pairs the fabled allure of the briny bivalve and dozens of other culinary seductions with the “Irish aphrodisiac” known as —Guinness.

The Chowda House, just across Bridge Avenue from the Red Bank train station, makes some fantastic clam chowder, which also happens to be the hottest takeout item on the menu, waitress Tish Mancia tells PieHole.

But the fish and chips, we’re told, is the second-most ordered item — and according to many PieHole readers, the best fried fish in the area.

We take claims such as this seriously, and went to investigate for ourselves.

Red Bank Republican Chairman Sean Di Somma says he’s confident his party’s long-sought takeover of the borough council will stand up to a recount and the sorting-through of provisional ballots.

The still-uncertified vote tallies from Tueday’s election show the GOP won both open council seats to claim their first majority on the governing body in a generation Tuesday.

But with about two dozen provisional ballots yet to be counted, just four votes separate Republican Mike Whelan and three-term incumbent Democrat Mike DuPont, according the Monmouth County Clerk’s website.

Red Bank Republicans won both open seats to claim their first borough council majority in a a generation Tuesday.

Political newcomers Mark Taylor and Mike Whelan — who wasn’t yet born when his party last controlled the governing body —  outpolled three-term incumbent Democrat Mike DuPont and his running mate, Mike Ballard, to give the GOP a 4-2 majority.

• And just yards away, the owner of the two-year-old Chowda House seafood restaurant plans to transform the long-vacant former Dave’s Car Wash on Bridge Avenue into a seasonal ice cream stand.

morsels smallDespite being the smallest of the six states that make up New England, the breadth of unique, hyperlocal culinary contributions from Rhode Island make it a great place to look for inspiration for Super Bowl Sunday’s menu items.

The foods that are sure to make a Rhode Islanders’ mouth water that you’ve probably never heard of include hot wieners, the spinach pie and pizza strips, all polished off with a coffee milk.

But with a nod to the Patriots’ presence in the big game, the one Rhode Island food we’ve got our eyes on for this Super Bowl is the stuffed quahog, aka stuffie.

RED BANK: A FLAVOUR FAVE AT THE MOLLY

flavour 3 081612It’s described as “a grassroots culinary campaign driven by the borough’s top chefs, restaurateurs and proprietors,”and when the Red Bank Flavour collective hosts the Holiday Flavour event this Thursday, it will honor the great works of anther borough-based institution that’s grown from the grassroots up.

Taking place from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Molly Pitcher Inn, the third annual event offers up an array of food and drink from over 20 Red Bank-based restaurants, eateries and purveyors — with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Parker Family Health Center, the community health care facility established 14 years ago in an empty Shrewsbury parking lot with three patients and a donated trailer. Operating now from its own dedicated facility (and through the efforts of countless volunteers and donations), the PFHC serves more than 8,600 Monmouth County residents who lack health insurance or means to pay for healthcare services.

Between the weekend barbecues, the riverside food fests and the many open-air opportunities for grabbing a bite, it can be a bit difficult to digest all the options available to the free-ranging foodie here in the good old summertime.

If Red Bank Rivercenter and Red Bank Flavour have their way, however, we’ll all just be expected to Walk It Off  — and to let our legs and wheels carry us about the borough’s sidewalks and storefronts, for the first in a new monthly round of Food and Wine Walk events.

A self-guided tasting tour that takes in more than two dozen restaurants, specialty shops, taverns and eateries, the inaugural walk runs from 2 to 6 pm this Sunday, with a strolling smorgasbord of wares and fare, from fine wines and eclectic desserts to tapas, sushi and more.

Presented by Red Bank RiverCenter and produced by RUEevents, it’s a seven-hour fleadh of food, music and stout that benefits a pair a pair of regional cancer treatment nonprofits — the Jane H. Booker Cancer Center at  Riverview Medical Center, and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of NJ — in addition to helping fund the ongoing events and programs of the RiverCenter partnership.
