Red Bank entered into a period of transition Wednesday night, as a new mayor took the helm of a government that’s slated to vanish in seven months.

Billy Portman, a political neophyte who helped dismantle the local Democratic machine last year, was sworn into the town’s highest elected position pledging he’ll “keep the ship running smoothly” in the interim.

Red Bank firefighters gave a formal sendoff Tuesday to one of their own, a 26-year-old volunteer slain just blocks away from the firehouse where he found his purpose in life, in the words of Mayor Pasquale Menna.

In an open casket at the Calvary Baptist Church on Bridge Avenue, Andrew Hill‘s remains were dressed in the formal blue firefighters’ uniform he’d recently finished paying for.

Outside, the fire engine on which he’d answered numerous alarms waited to carry his casket to a cemetery.

fcr175a They come from all over Monmouth County and parts beyond the rat rods and tuners, the street rods and customs, the competition-class racers, the blue-ribbon show cars, and the weekend works-in-progress from countless suburban garages.

Tonight, they’ll be lining the streets of Red Bank’s business district in remembrance of a good friend, to benefit of a great cause.

Once a semi-regular Friday night occurrence, Red Bank Cruise Night returns for a special edition presented by Red Bank RiverCenter in conjunction with Friends of Stu Paer an organization co-founded by Frank Woods, borough code enforcement officer and, as a classic car owner himself, an organizer of the annual Liberty Hose Car Show.

A presentation on code enforcement matters drew a pretty sparse and rather muted crowd Wednesday night.

But redbankgreen was distracted, we admit, by who showed up and sat together at the table nearest Borough Administrator Stanley Sickels as he spoke to 30 or so residents in the River Street Commons auditorium.

Sunny Sharma (in hat), owner of Best Liquors on Leighton Avenue, sat opposite John Ross (in green t-shirt) and John Tyler (in orange shirt). Tyler and Ross are Leighton Avenue homeowners who have been demanding that the borough put Sharma out of business over noise, litter and other violations.

CODE WORD: ENFORCEMENT

Red Bankers have heard a lot about code enforcement in recent months. There appears to be a consensus that a lack of vigor in holding absentee landlords accountable for housing violations is at the root of rental-house overcrowding, particularly but not exclusively on the West Side.

This, in turn, has contributed to challenges ranging from noise and litter to a burgeoning school population that does not speak English as a first language, imposing additional education costs on taxpayers, say critics.

Pat Menna ran for mayor promising to beef up code enforcement. Now that he’s taken office, what can residents expect in terms of action?

Some answers might be had tomorrow night at the River Street Commons when the Westside Community Group hosts a code enforcement forum beginning at 7p. The public is invited.

Governor Phil Murphy rescinded his three-week shutdown of parks Wednesday while threatening to reverse course again if social-distancing guidelines are not maintained.

At his daily briefing on the COVID-19 crisis, Murphy also weighed in on an aborted plan by the Red Bank Regional board of ed to meet in person, saying his orders on public gatherings are the only ones that matter.

Theft: On 05/14/19 a walk in report was made for a theft that occurred from a locker in the area of W Front St. $280.00 cash was taken from a wallet leaving $40.00 behind. Ptl. Luke Cahill.

Criminal Mischief: Unknown individuals broke a window on a parked vehicle during a scuffle they were having in the area on W Front St during the early morning of 05/18/19. The damage is estimated to be approximately $1000.00. Ptl. Luke Cahill.

On a weekend that marks the official curtain-up for Two River Theater’s season-opening production of A Raisin in the Sun, two of the area’s longest established community stage companies are offering up something for those who get a thrill from first-nighting — with fresh local looks at a couple of Broadway favorites from the 1980s and 1990s.

When last we looked in on Red Bank’s own Phoenix Productions, the resident theatrical troupe of the Count Basie Theatre was marking its turf with a revisit to West Side Story — an early success for the young lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and an indicator of great things to come. When the company’s 2017 season resumes this Friday, September 15, it will once again look to the Sondheim playbook — and to the storybook realm of the Brothers Grimm — with a musical journey Into the Woods.

Robbery: On 10-17-16 in the area of Bridge Ave. the victim reported three black males stole his wallet. The contents of the wallet were $17.00 in cash, a NJ driver’s license and a debit card. Ptl. Kristin Altimari.

Criminal Mischief: On 10-20-16 in the area of Harding Rd. the victim reported a car struck a retaining wall on the property. The estimated cost to repair the damage is between $1, 200.00 – $1,500.00. Ptl. Cevin Albert.

RED BANK: TWO NIGHTS OF PEACE ‘N MUSIC

Woodstock-era icon Graham Nash takes to the Basie boards on Saturday…while fellow festival veterans, the not-so-sly Family Stone, headline a 70s Rock and Funk Fest on Sunday.

One weekend past the 46th anniversary of the legendary Woodstock festival, the Count Basie Theatre offers audiences here on the greater Green an opportunity to catch up with several veterans of those “Three Days of Peace and Music” — all in climate-controlled comfort, and with no requirement to get all muddy about it.

The shared experience begins Saturday night at 8 pm, with a very rare solo-tour appearance by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Graham Nash. Spotlighting material from a massive career-cataloguing box set, the British-born singer/songwriter and activist who first invaded the colonies as a member of The Hollies — and who homesteaded the Laurel Canyon sound through his culture-defining work with CSN (and sometimes Y) — is expected to lend his signature skills to songs that range from “On a Carousel,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House” and “Just a Song Before I Go,” to solo stuff like “Chicago” and a possible preview of a work-in-progress studio project.
