It’s considered the oldest football rivalry in the New Jersey Shore Conference — and on Saturday, May 14, alumni from Red Bank Regional High School will face off against their counterparts from Long Branch High School, in their first-ever Alumni Game.

Scheduled for kickoff at 4 p.m., the game will take place at the Count Basie turf field, located at 11 Henry Street in Red Bank. It’s a fitting bookend to a year marked by great athletic success for the current RBR team, which went undefeated and made it to the state championship for the first time in decades.

Already showing cracks, the Red Bank Democratic party’s facade ruptured Monday night with the announcement that political newcomers will challenge two incumbents for their council seats.

Days after holding a virtual re-election fundraiser attended by Governor Phil Murphy, Kate Triggiano and Hazim Yassin opted to bypass the local party nomination process controlled by Councilman Ed Zipprich as they seek second terms, saying he’s on a vendetta that “reeks of boss politics.”

juan sardo 032614Folk singer Melanie, who won radio fame for her Woodstock-era hits “Brand New Key,” “Beautiful People” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” is among the next batch of inductees into Red Bank Regional’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame next week.

A graduate of the pre-RBR era Red Bank High in 1964, Melanie – also known as Melanie Safka Shekeryk – is slated to attend the April 24 induction ceremony, according to a school spokeswoman.
