In a carnivorous mood, PieHole headed over to the newly opened Shapiro’s New York Style Delicatessen in Red Bank, where we found plenty of Jewish-style sandwiches to choose from.
Corned beef and chicken noodle soup are staples at most of the delis on the Greater Red Bank Green, so what sets this place apart from the others? For a transplanted New Yorker, it’s the nostalgic Yiddish menu choices, such as blintzes (sweet stuffed crepes), latkes (potato pancakes), tongue (braised cow tongue) and kishke (stuffed derma), that we haven’t seen or tasted in years.
RED BANK: OLD-STYLE DELI SET TO OPEN
With a menu touting hot pastrami sandwiches, potato knishes, matzo ball soup and other hallmarks of traditional Jewish delis, Shapiro’s New York Delicatessen is set to open in Red Bank Friday.

With luck, the Greater Red Bank Green will have a new, authentic Jewish deli by Thanksgiving, as reported last week by redbankgreen‘s Retail Churn.
Meantime, folks salivating for the arrival of Shapiro’s New York Style Delicatessen in Red Bank — or mourning the pending demise of New York’s Carnegie Deli —can nosh for an hour or two on the memories and insights of a counterman whose family knows from lox and herring.

The murders of 17 people by a gunman in Florida last week prompted a hasty new-member orientation in Red Bank Tuesday night for an organization dedicated to what it calls “common sense gun laws.”
Volunteers with Moms Demand Action said the February 14 slaughter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland has unleashed a surge of interest unseen since the group’s founding five years ago in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut murders of 27 children and adults.

In this edition of redbankgreen‘s Retail Churn, we’ve got news of a spa opening; a window-coverings business moving to a street-level storefront after a decade hidden away in a basement; and a women’s clothing shop slipping in between two other dress shops.
The spa is Woodhouse Day Spa, at 73 Broad Street, directly opposite Monmouth Street. The space, which is below-ground, has been home to two other spas in recent years — Skinprint Day Spa and SkinScience Aesthetic Medical Spa — both of which turned out to be short-lived. But like any entrepreneur, Woodhouse owner Alla Shapiro believes she can break the pattern and massage her salon to profitability.

Time to shake those swallowtail tux jackets and evening gloves out of storage; unbag those stoles and tiaras and opera glasses we’re kicking it classical this weekend.
All right, dress codes aren’t what they used to be, at the symphony hall as at any other place. But it shouldn’t mean that our own homegrown performing arts entities aren’t worth getting dressed up for. If anything, we here in Monmouth are guilty of having taken for granted the fact that our once-rural county boasts an exceptional chorale and a truly first-rate semi-professional orchestra a couple of innovative, creative organizations, packed with passionate and talented people.
And both, by some way-cool karmic astrology, are storming the stage of Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre this weekend.
