April 28, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
The Shrewsbury Chorale will perform ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,’ a concert of music by Vivaldi, Britten, and Handel in support of charities.
Guest conductor Joshua Anand Slater will direct a musical ensemble that includes chorus, vocal soloists, and chamber orchestra. The program will feature Vivaldi’s ‘Magnificat,’ written around 1726, to support a Venetian orphanage, the Ospedale della Pietà, which is still active today. Britten’s contemporary ‘Cantata Misericordium,’ commissioned for the1963 celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Red Cross, will follow. This piece, sung in Latin, is a musical adaptation of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Rounding out the program will be Handel’s ‘Foundling Hospital Anthem,’ composed for a 1749 performance to aid a London hospital housing and educating orphans. Handel inserted his own ‘Hallelujah Chorus’ as a finale to this piece.
A reception will follow the concert.
