SUMMARY:Charles Compo at the Art Alliance
DESCRIPTION:The Art Alliance of Monmouth County will present the work of Charles Compo in their windows for the month of June. Compo is an internationally recognized composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and painter whose work captures the intricacies of contemporary life. His paintings are characterized by surreal abstract imagery\, symbolic iconography and motifs of mysticism\, violence and the subconscious. His work takes a look inwards and unveils what may go unnoticed to some.\nCompo’s background in jazz and experimental music allow for a unique exploration in the visual medium of painting. Within the past five years Compo has pivoted\, putting down the saxophone and picking up the paint brush. His nascent love for the medium has given him space to reflect both inwards and outwards. His paintings focus on the passage of time\, social decay\, mortality and remembrance. His use of cryptic symbolism runs parallel to Vanitas and ponders questions of existence\, futurity and contemporary life that strives for higher ideals.\nCompo’s paintings have been awarded finalist in several juried exhibitions across the globe. His work has been prominently exhibited in multiple group exhibitions and Biennales internationally such as the London Biennale (2022 and 2024) and the Chianciano Biennale in Italy in 2024. Work by the artist is represented in museum and public collections worldwide\, including Museo d’Arte di Chianciano Terme\, The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum\, The Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art\, and The Yuko Nii Foundation’s Permanent Collection at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center.\nCompo says\nMy art is an expression of my creative impulse\, a process of exploration and discovery that brings me into a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. Through the act of arranging items and experimenting with brushstrokes and paint\, I enter a state of flow where thoughts and emotions emerge and find their place in the visual language of my work. For me\, the act of creating art is a form of meditation\, a way of engaging with the present moment and channeling my innermost thoughts and feelings. I am fascinated by the interplay of color\, form\, and composition\, and how these elements can be used to create a sense of depth\, movement\, and balance. Whether through the use of symbolism\, abstraction\, or figurative representation\, I hope to create art that invites viewers to engage with the mystery and beauty of the world around us.\nIn the main gallery space McCall will jury work by members on the theme Down the Shore. Hoofs and Heartbeats\, work by students from the Hackensack Meridian Autism Program\, will also be presented in the gallery.\nAn Artists’ Reception will be held Saturday\, June 7th from 6-8 PM. The public is invited to attend. The exhibition is on view until June 24th\, Tuesday – Saturday\, 12-4 PM. Free of charge. Art Alliance of Monmouth County\, 33 Monmouth Street\, Red Bank\, NJ.\nFor more information about the exhibit\, visit our website www.artallianceofmonmouth.org\, or visit or call the gallery during operating hours\, (732) 842-9403. Founded in 1978\, the Art Alliance of Monmouth County is dedicated to promoting the advancement of the visual arts and providing exhibition\, studio\, and classroom space to local artists. New members are always welcome.\nMembership in the Art Alliance is open to visual artists at any skill level and to art lovers. Membership fee is $40 per year\, $25 for students with id. Benefits of membership include reduced entry fee for all exhibits ($5 per piece for up to 3 pieces for members; $10 per piece for non-members); affordable studio space; diverse classes and workshops; networking opportunities; the possibility of mounting an independent exhibit during the summer. In addition\, the Art Alliance maintains a website\, a bi-monthly newsletter\, and a Facebook page.\nProgramming at the Art Alliance is made possible in part by Monmouth Arts through funding from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders\, and the New Jersey State Council on the arts.

SUMMARY:FREE CHAMBER MUSIC QUARTET CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:WHAT: The Red Bank Chamber Music Society proudly welcomes the Ulysses String Quartet as they return to perform an emotionally resonant concert featuring composers whose music re-imagine the traditions of the past\, especially those of Hungarian and Slavic folk music . This concert will take place on Sunday\, May 4\, 2025\, at 4:30 PM at the Trinity Church Auditorium in Red Bank\, NJ. \nThe concert is free of charge\, thanks to the generous donations of our membership and no tickets are required. \nOpening the program is Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 1 in C major\, Op. 49\, a youthful and spirited work filled with folk-inspired melodies and an undercurrent of emotional complexity that hints at the composer’s future brilliance. \nNext\, the quartet performs Max Richter’s haunting On The Nature of Daylight\, arranged by violinist Christina Bouey. This contemporary classic\, used frequency in cinematic soundtracks\, blends layered harmony with raw emotion\, offering a moment of introspective stillness and lyrical beauty. \nThe first half of the concert ends with two short pieces by Stephan Koncz — a re-imaging of Erik Satie’s beloved Gymnopédie No. 1\, punningly entitled A New Satiesfaction\, and a rollicking theme and variations on the famous Australian bush ballad Waltzing Matilda. \nAfter the intermission is Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5\, a bold and intricate masterwork that showcases Bartók’s genius for fusing traditional Hungarian folk motifs with avant-garde compositional techniques. The work is both cerebral and visceral\, capturing the essence of an evolving national voice. \nRounding out the program is La Marche des Scythes by Royer\, in a vibrant arrangement by Bouey. Originally written for harpsichord\, this fiery baroque dance bursts with dramatic flair and rhythmic drive—an unexpected and energetic evocation of ancient Scythian warriors galloping across the Russian steppes.

SUMMARY:ART ALLIANCE: COFFEE SACK AND SHORE ART
DESCRIPTION:The Art Alliance of Monmouth County will present the work of Monica McCall in their windows for the month of May. McCall started painting on burlap coffee sacks in early 2000 as a means of making signs for her Coffee house. She fell in love with the texture and remembered Guaguin painted on burlap so she tried it with own work. She related that it is not easy to prep the coffee sacks for painting. The sacks need to be deconstructed and cleaned. No two are alike. They can be made of very course jute and loosely woven or smooth and tightly woven. They are rough and uneven with knots or holes. It’s a labor of love to prepare but she embraces the process. The subject matter is usually figurative combining imagined and real-life scenarios with sincere attempts to point from her heart. She said she thinks about Van Gogh a lot when Ishe paints. She sees his paintings as exuding joy and love for nature and humanity. She aspires to that. Van Gogh painted on burlap once but didn’t like the coarse texture and only painted his ‘Portrait of Gauguin’ on burlap. Probably as an homage. \nIn the main gallery space McCall will jury work by members on the theme Down the Shore. Hoofs and Heartbeats\, work by students from the Hackensack Meridian Autism Program\, will also be presented in the gallery. \nAn Artists’ Reception will be held Saturday\, June 7th from 6-8 PM. The public is invited to attend. The exhibition is on view until April 2nd\, Tuesday – Saturday\, 12-4 PM. Free of charge. Art Alliance of Monmouth County\, 33 Monmouth Street\, Red Bank\, NJ \nFor more information about the exhibit\, visit our website www.artallianceofmonmouth.org\, or visit or call the gallery during operating hours\, (732) 842-9403. Founded in 1978\, the Art Alliance of Monmouth County is dedicated to promoting the advancement of the visual arts and providing exhibition\, studio\, and classroom space to local artists. New members are always welcome. \nMembership in the Art Alliance is open to visual artists at any skill level and to art lovers. In addition\, the Art Alliance maintains a website\, a bi-monthly newsletter\, and a Facebook page. \nProgramming at the Art Alliance is made possible in part by Monmouth Arts through funding from the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders\, and the New Jersey State Council on the arts.

SUMMARY:PICKLEBALL FUNDRAISER
DESCRIPTION:Dink\, Slam and Serve for a Cause! Inaugural Pickleball Social Benefits Homeless in Monmouth and Ocean Counties \nLearn a new sport or show off your Kitchen King or Queen skills as you dink\, slam and serve at the inaugural HABcore Pickleball Social. Hosted at The Atlantic Club’s new Pickleball Center in Manasquan\, from 4 to 7 p.m. on March 30\, event proceeds will benefit housing support programs for families\, veterans and individuals with special needs in Monmouth and Ocean counties. \n“This event is a fantastic way for the community to come together\, enjoy a great game\, and support an organization making a real difference in people’s lives\,” said HABcore Executive Director Steve Heisman. “As affordable housing continues to grow as a dire need in our community\, we’re excited to see people rally behind a cause that helps many of our neighbors live with stability\, dignity and hope.” \nOpen to players of all skill levels with family-friendly pricing for students ages 11 and older\, the event introduces beginners to the game\, offers seasoned players friendly competition with games led by pickleball pro Kim Smith\, and benefits HABcore’s affordable housing and homeless prevention programs. Food and beverages as well as door prizes will round out the afternoon. Sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals and local businesses to show their support. \nWhy Pickleball?\nTrinity Hall student and HABcore volunteer Eliza Chiles\, 16 of Atlantic Highlands saw the growing interest in the sport of pickleball among her friends and offered to help organize a pickleball-focused fundraiser for students and families that would introduce more people to HABcore and its programs.\n“I hope people will leave the event with a greater understanding of HABcore and its mission and values. I also hope that some of the HABcore residents will be able to attend the event because I know people will really enjoy speaking with them and learning about the agency through their experiences\,” said Eliza Chiles\, chair of the Pickleball Social Committee. \nTo register or sponsor the Pickleball Social by the March 15 deadline\, please visit: https://habcore.org/event/pickleball-social/.
