Think of eating from a Jersey garden, and tomatoes, squash and eggplant all come to mind. And for good reason, too. Gardening is almost always synonymous with our abundant summer harvests.
But one of the biggest advantages we here on the Green have over other regions isn’t the high heat of our summer growing season, but the length of our fall growing season.
“Our area has one of the greatest climates for growing fall crops, and that is because it’s such a long season.” says Wendy Weiner, of the Front Yard Farmer. “We get a very long fall growing season. Even in New York state, it’s much shorter.”

Sugar, spice and… liquid nitrogen? Red Bank’s Freezy Freeze is putting a chemistry-class spin on the traditional ice cream truck.
With the help of liquid nitrogen, what starts out as milk, cream and sugar quickly transforms into creamy, dense ice cream. Photographer-turned-ice cream man Andrew Deming, 37, gives his daughter, Molly, credit for his current profession and blossoming food truck.
“This is all her idea,” said Deming, who said he took the now 7-year-old into an ice cream shop that made ice cream with liquid nitrogen. “She said that being an ice cream man would be a great job, because I always get to make people happy.”
The Deming family began to make ice cream in the kitchen of their Red Bank home, and not long after, decided to bring the frozen treat to the Red Bank Farmers Market.

A one-man, 24-hour crime spree that included a holdup of a Red Bank gas station and a shooting in Asbury Park got a Monmouth County man indicted on federal charges Thursday, authorities said.
Quam Wilson, 23, of Neptune Township, started the blitz by shooting an Asbury Park cab driver in the head during a robbery, an indictment handed down by a grand jury in Trenton alleges.
The driver survived.

Today, redbankgreen introduces a new occasional feature called Class Act.
Class Act reports news about local young people who’ve moved on to college and beyond to continue their education. We’ll be grouping them by town of residence and posting periodically. The first one is about Middletown residents who recently graduated from college, and one who’s still there, doing some esoteric research.
The feature is one of several new ones we’ll be rolling out on our all-new All Good page, which is dedicated to “news from a brighter future,” with special emphasis on the achievements and good works of kids, volunteers, charitable organizations and others who embody the spirit of a better world for all of us.

When it hits you, drop us a line, please.
Did you recognize the object in last week’s Where? Yeah, neither did anyone else. The sole response we got was erroneous.

A group of Sea Bright residents has been charged with investigating the big C.
Stripped of its white shingles and reduced to little more than its steeple, Holy Cross Church in Rumson appeared to blend into its temporary burnt-ochre surroundings Tuesday evening.

The unofficial end of summer may have passed, but Bain’s Hardware on Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright seems to have ignored the memo. Anyway, locals know that there’s still plenty of time left for beach fun, when the sun cooperates. And the National Weather Service says it will today, when we get ample sunshine and temperatures in the low 80s. Which way to the beach? (Click to enlarge)

A pregnant Red Bank woman and her husband are facing rabies vaccinations after being exposed to a rabid bat inside their home early last week, redbankgreen has learned.
The bat was the second to get into the Irving Place residence in a matter of days, said the owner, who asked that his name not be published out of concern for privacy. The first, which was also captured, turned out to be disease-free.
The rabid bat was also the third bat to get into a Red Bank home in less than two weeks, says Animal Control Officer Henry. And one got into the Red Bank Charter School less than two weeks ago, too.
