Jazz Arts Academy Summer Session 2025

This camp is a one week intensive jazz studies program for aspiring teen jazz musicians, where each student gets the opportunity to perform and to learn about the many aspects of Jazz.

Our performance-based program offers Jazz ensemble (combos & big band), lessons in music theory and improvisation, and personalized instruction. Students gain insight and experience into the world of jazz by immersive, hands-on classes, workshops, and listening sessions. The faculty includes world-class working professional recording artists who are also dedicated educators: Brandon McCune, Zach Lorelli, and Joe Muccioli. Visiting artists also come to teach about melody, harmony, improvisation and the rich history of this great music.

For beginning jazz students, this session will introduce concepts of jazz melody, phrasing, harmony and the introductory basics of jazz improvisation. More advanced students will dive deeply into Jazz performance training. Topics covered will include ii-V-I vocabulary, substitutions, common scale patterns, advanced scales, and Jazz History. Each attendee will be placed in ensembles large or small (depending on enrollment) based on their ability and level. Listening sessions and performance training is integral to these intensive training sessions.
