  • How do a reader obtain additional information concerning individuals who are arrested and named?

Is there a link to a site that tracks those listed or does this site follow-up on the individuals?

    Thanks

  • Which Middle School did this happen in?

    Thanks

Posted by: Parent of an 8th Grader on January 31, 2009 at 8:52 am | Permalink
  • This happened in the Red Bank Middle School. Apparantley, one kid brought the knife to school ( I let you guess at the etnicity) because he was threatened to be jumped by a gang. For those of you who dont know, their are two rival Latin gangs in the middle school. The knife was passed on to a girl because the word was spread that this one kid had it. She then passed it on to a friend of my son to avoid be caught with it. He has been suspended until March 1st. As far as the other two, I dont know. I do know these kids are scared. Red Bank has a problem. How many of you have heard about the riot on Shrewsbury Avenue involving 50 people in front of the Elks Club? This happened around 1/10/09 (again, I'll let you all guess at the ethnicity.)Red Bank has a problem, the facts speak for themselves, if your lucky enough to have access to them.

But I thought "diversity is our strength." Do you think the diversicrats could be lying to us?

  • I think the problem is that someone is listening to information given to them from their CHILDREN - From the sources I have heard that the incident was NOT a GANG related incident- and was more of a Family crisis & Domestic violence situation. That being said - You folks simply have no clue about what you are writing, saying or talking bout, But once AGAIN you racism jumps to the fore front and proves how intellectually challenged you are!! and If John was a more responsible web/editor he wouldn't allow such false comments to be needlessly posted - If you have a question or concern regarding this matter call the school and speak with an adult!

  • Oh I feel so much more comfortable knowing that it was simply a family crisies/domestic violence issue! (NOT)Its nice to know thats how my neighbors solve their issues. You mean like the domestic violence/family crises situation at the Primary School where the father almost stabbed the mother to death in front of their child? What family crisis situation warrants bringing a knife to school? Who was he going to stab? His brother and /or sister? What Sources have you heard and how do you know they are factually correct. Forget racism, the facts we do know is a kid brought a knife to school. There is a problem here and has been a problem here. And why are you blaming John for allowing an open forum? That is what free speech is all about, whether you like whats being said or not. Keep sticking your head in the sand and see where it gets you and this going down the tubes fast town.

  • There are definitely gangs in Red Bank. This information came directly from an undercover officer for the state police working in the gang violence unit.

Los cafeterios is one of the gangs and I am not sure of the other.

I have no idea if this was a gang related incident, but it would not surprise me.

Let's not treat our kids like kids because they probably know more than the adults.

I think we need more people living in Red Bank. That will help the gang/domestic/ crime issues. That was sarcasm

Posted by: Red Bank is Changing (not for the better) on February 1, 2009 at 1:23 pm | Permalink
  • I also heard a rumor that there was a knife at school. The rumor I heard was that the student intended to use the knife on himself and is getting counseling. And I heard the rumor third-hand not fourth-hand like 20yearresident. The rumor I heard did not mention ethnicity.

    We have no facts.

It appears some kids at the Middle School believe that a kid brought a knife to school. Some - maybe all - of those kids think that the kid was latin. Posters here have given us three theories on why and three different consequences for the kid involved. But it's all rumor.

Years ago white parents used to spread rumors about black gangs at school. Now we're getting rumors about latin gangs. But we're still not getting any facts.

Posted by: WhatFacts? on February 1, 2009 at 1:38 pm | Permalink
  • Red Bank is Changing (not for the better) this posters - post are untrue and completely false - they are obviously segregationist pining for the old days of separate but equal - There are no undercover state police at the Middle school the situation was a planned attempted suicide and was not gang related - "Red Bank is Changing (not for the better)" should be ashamed of themselves and ask their God for forgiveness - This Racial attitude is what our town and country does not need - maybe it's best that "Red Bank is Changing (not for the better)" keep their children in the Private exclusive Charter School and not in the public school system - simply to lie in an attempt to hurt others is shameful behavior

Posted by: shameful behavior on February 1, 2009 at 4:51 pm | Permalink
  • Shameful Behavior,

There is no "private, exclusive Charter School". There is a lottery to get in that is open to anyone. As a matter of fact, when my child went there, he was the minority in his class (he's white). I did not hear the the "rumor" 4th hand, but straight from one of the kids who had the knife. He was afraid of being jumped by "the southside 13" a latin gang. No one here is being racist, but unfortunately when you tell the truth these days and people dont like it, thats what they call it.

Posted by: sickofit on February 1, 2009 at 5:36 pm | Permalink
  • shameful behavior should be ashamed of their own ignorance. Since when is the charter school private and exclusive ?!!! It's a free alternative to those parents who would rather not send their kids to the public school. You do not pass a test or pay a fee to attended. You must have the Charter school mixed up with St. James and RBC.

  • Just try getting your kid into the Charter school without knowing someone - I have heard of people moving over to Monroe and getting their kids into the school the very next day (with a little help of course nudge nudge nudge wick wink) - I know other parnets who had their child on the list (#2 or 3 on the list) for 3 years and gave up when they saw what was going on . Their is nothing Public about the school it does not reflect the demographics of the town (based on the age of the students - not bulk population), it is predominantly white and has most of the power brokers & town councils children attending - so give up the BS about the Charter school being a public school - it maybe be paid for by the public but there is nothing public about it.

  • Movingout of RedBank glad to see you go… maybe you'll feel better in a town like Holmdel or back on Staten Island ,,It's funny that since this whole incident wasn't gang related, But some of you want to create a "story" that isn't true or correct simply to justify your anger towards a certain "Group" that you have answered your own question without my having to name a specific person, I share the concerns of those parents who actually have children in the middle school and have called and asked questions and been involved with groups within in the school to address this sort of problem, If there is a Gang Problem? it is not evident in the middle school and I would be more concerned with RBR, than that of 10 - 12 year old children, Since most of you who are on this blog DO NOT have children in the Red Bank Public School system, you are not aware of when a situation happens the parents are always notified , this past incident since it was a personal level apparently did not merit any notification. But since "Movingout of RedBank" is leaving please take your "racist attitude" with you, as for me I was born here and strive to make it a better place to live.

Posted by: class warfare on February 1, 2009 at 6:36 pm | Permalink
  • Shameful, are you sure you live in RB because you actually sound like you are from a another planet. The reason children are on the list for so long is because so many parents want their children in and judging by the above postings for good reason. I know many many people with children in the Charter School and not one of them has complained of the experience you describe. They may have had to wait a few years but nobody paid anybody off or called in political favors.

Posted by: Movingout of RedBank on February 1, 2009 at 6:38 pm | Permalink
  • class warfare,
almost everybody who commented has a kid in the RB school system. Thats how this whole thread started, a parent posted the question of whether anybody else had heard of this incident.

    Shameful,
My kid got into the charter school the first time I put his name in for the lottery. I am not a power broker and I am not on the town council, it was simple luck of the draw like everybody else. I have since taken him out for reasons I dont care to give. Attacking the charter school does not change the fact that someone brought a knife into the middle school.

Posted by: sickofit on February 1, 2009 at 7:54 pm | Permalink
  • I've heard that rumor about the Charter School not running a clean lottery. In fact, I've spoken to someone who told me their children were given favorable treatment in getting into the Charter School.

    But it's just a rumor.

Like the rumor that someone brought a knife to the Middle School.

    Just rumors.

  • sickofit - how do you know your kid got into the Charter school simply out of "Luck" and not because of their "racial profile" or "fit" they actually pulled his/her number out of a hat and you were there, or/and more likely they contacted you and said that you child had won that position? something to think about. "a corrupt system doesn't not readily correct itself"

Posted by: something to think about on February 1, 2009 at 11:20 pm | Permalink
  • That's ridiculous.

The only people slamming the Charter School in here obviously know nothing about it and/or are bitter about their child not getting in.

If there are people on the town council that have their children in the Charter School, I don't know who they are. I have been a Charter parent for 7 years and I have several years to go. We are not on the town council and neither of us are power brokers. I'm sure there are broker's children in RBCS simply because we live in Red Bank and there are likely broker's children in all of our local schools.

It sounds to me that "Shameful" and "Something to think about" are simply ignorant of the school in general. They don't seem to understand that RBCS is not all white, nor are all the children wealthy. There are children of all races in that school and if the demographics don't actually match the town, maybe you should view the parents of most of the children in the public school system.

The lottery is legal and open to everyone. Saying it's skewed and we all got in because we know someone is simply "shameful" ignorance. I knew no one when my eldest child got in. And eventually my children will attend the high school which is shared by everyone in town. My children's closest friends are Asian, African American, Caucasian and Latino. Neither of their classes have ever been all white or even remotely close to being all white or all wealthy.

  • Wow! This is some conversation.

I just wanted to clarify. I did not say there were gangs in the school or that this was a gang related incident. I did state if you re-read my comment that I know for a fact that there are gangs in our town of Red Bank. The person who told me was not on assignment in the RB school, but is an undercover officer for the state of NJ in the gang violence unit.

I have no shame because my comments were not discriminatory or false.

  • OK, here are some facts.

Ethnicity. These numbers are pulled from the 2007-2008 data, the most recent available on the Dept. of Education site.

Public Schools (K-8, excluding special ed):
    White: 11.5%
    Black: 24.5%
    Hispanic: 62.5%
    Asian: 1.6%

    Charter School:
    White: 44.0%
    Black: 25.2%
    Hispanic: 27.0%
    Asian: 3.8%

Income level: Last I checked, the district was about 75% low-income students, while the Charter School was just under 40% low-income students.

Posted by: Dan on February 2, 2009 at 10:28 am | Permalink
  • Something to think about,
I happened NOT to be there when my kid's name was pulled out of the hat. I received a phone call telling me my kid got in. They did not know me and they did not know if I was white, black, hispanic or from Mars. I am not on the town council nor am I any kind of power in this town. My kid is no longer in the Charter school for reasons of my own that have nothing to do with racism, if it was I would not have put him in the middle school and ONCE AGAIN attacking the Charter School does not change the FACT, yes FACT, that a knife was brought into the middle school.

Posted by: sickofit on February 2, 2009 at 10:40 am | Permalink
  • Did you see the knife?

    That would be a fact.

Did you talk to an adult who saw the knife? Talk to the student who had the knife?

That would still be hearsay, not fact. But it would be more than a rumor.

All you've got is a rumor. You talked to a child who talked to a child who saw the knife.

The rumors that I've heard (and trends I've seen) about the Charter School are that people with connections do get in and people who are not on the waiting list get slid in. I have not heard rumors that EVERY child is hand-picked. I don't have all the information and maybe it's just coincidence that people with connections get in.

Just rumors. I have talked to people directly involved, but since I have not seen direct evidence myself it's all hearsay.

  • to "sickofit" it would be easy enough to see from your sirname that you were or weren't a latino and from your address what your racial profile was. so I think that point being made that you weren't there when your child's name got pulled from the "hat" stands you don't know for a fact if it was "luck" or planned enrollment to keep the Charter school predominantly white. and I think that the Council persons kids should go to the public school and not the private exclusive one.

  • I was at the Charter School last for the lottery drawing last year and it's NOT rigged. Everyone who applies gets assigned a number. On the night of the drawing, everyone goes (or can go)and numbered balls go into a bingo cage. Numbers are pulled to see who gets the spots, and the remaining drawn numbers are put on the waiting list in the order they were drawn.

Regarding the waiting list, I believe that it's only for the one year. You don't stay on the waiting list for successive years. You have to re-enter the lottery each year.

And no, my (Caucasian) child did not get in in. But many African Americans and Latinos did get in.

No gangs in Red Bank? It's not hard to find the truth.

  • Red Bank Green has now posted an article confirming what i originally stated when the original poster asked the question of whether or not anyone had heard about the incident. God forbid you tell the truth. When you do you get called a racist. On top of that, some of you chose this as an opportunity to attack the charter school, which had nothing to do with this topic. Some of you need to get your heads out of the sand and the blinkers off your eyes. The first step to fixing a problem is to admit there is one.

What you originally posted was that a student brought a knife to school to defend himself against a gang. You hinted that ethnicity had something to do with it. You stated that there are two gangs in the school.

The other article on Red Bank Green says that a student brought a pocket knife to school to protect himself from someone outside school, but that no gangs were involved. And that there is no evidence of gangs in the school. No ethnicity is mentioned.

The story does not back up your rumor of latin gang activity at the schools.

  • I have to wonder, Dan, if you're taking the considerations of the parents into question.

Many of the Hispanic children have parents that don't speak English, thus making that extra step of enrolling their kids just a bit more difficult. Not that there aren't many parents are RBCS that don't speak English as well. Not to mention, many have family members that would have kids automatically going to the regular schools anyway so they don't see the point.

It takes an extra step to enroll your child into the Charter School. Many parents just don't bother with it.

And for any of you that don't believe there is a gang problem…well, we all know ignorance is bliss, right?
