Former Red Bank Mayor Ed McKenna's car struck a pedestrian crossing East Front Street outside Riverview Medical Center last night, Red Bank Police report.
According to Capt. Steve McCarthy, 49-year-old borough resident and hospital employee Julia Sternik was hit in the crosswalk in front of the hospital at about 7:30p.
McKenna, 58, was cited by police for failing to yield to a pedestrian, McCarthy says.
At the time of the accident, yield signs indicating pedestrian crossing areas had been removed so as not to obstruct snow plows following yesterday's storm.
McKenna was traveling eastbound in a Mercedes sedan, an Sternik was crossing from the north to the south, McCarthy says.
Sgt. Michael Furlong, of the department's traffic safety unit, issued the summons to McKenna.
The nature and extent of Sternik's injuries were not disclosed. But McCarthy tells redbankgreen that Sternik remains hospitalized in stable condition at Riverview this afternoon.
He also says the investigation is all but wrapped up and no additional charges are likely to be filed. "There's no evidence of any other kind of violation," he says.
McKenna did not immediately respond to a request for comment left on his cellphone voicemail.
The scene of the accident was one of several intersections highlighted by redbankgreen in a recent article on pedestrian-crossing signs.
In October, 2000, McKenna was involved in a fender-bender at milepost 110 of the Parkway that raised questions about whether he had improperly left the scene before police arrived.
McKenna said he had identified himself to the driver of the other car and left the scene after waiting a while for police to arrive.
Later, State Police went to McKenna's home to question him but were told by his wife that he had taken a painkiller for a shoulder injury and was asleep.
