juan-sardo-032614-220x165-3355756Folk singer Melanie, who won radio fame for her Woodstock-era hits “Brand New Key,” “Beautiful People” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” is among the next batch of inductees into Red Bank Regional’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame next week.

A graduate of the pre-RBR era Red Bank High in 1964, Melanie – also known as Melanie Safka Shekeryk – is slated to attend the April 24 induction ceremony, according to a school spokeswoman.

Also up for induction are:

Howard D. Scher, class of 1963, an attorney and director of the Innocence Project of Philadelphia.

•  Alisyn Camerota, ’84, television journalist and current TV co-anchor for CNN’s New Day.

•  LeRoi Royal Jones, ’90, an all-American football player at Rowan University, municipal servant and educational administrator.

Juan Carlos Sardo, ’92; detective in the Red Bank police department and community leader.

The morning’s events are slated to begin at 10:45 with proclamations read by Mayor Pasquale Menna of Red Bank, Mayor Donald Burden of Shrewsbury and state Senator Jennifer Beck.

Also on the agenda are a brunch prepared and served by the RBR culinary students; musical entertainment by students in the Visual and Performing Arts program; readings of inductee biographies by writers from school newspaper; and remarks and classroom visits by the inductees themselves.
