A 10-day old stabbing has left a New York City woman hospitalized and Red Bank police short of information, a department spokesman says.
The Queens woman, whose name police are not identifying, is at Riverview Medical Center recovering from a single stab wound to the stomach and emergency surgery, says Captain Darren McConnell.
But who stabbed her, and where, remain mysteries.
McConnell tells redbankgreen that the victim, who’s in her mid-30s, has been unable to tell police much because of her condition and because she is unfamiliar with the town.
“She didn’t have a lot of information to give us,” he says. “She had no idea, really, where it happened.”
So far, police have determined that the woman was walking to a friend’s house from a restaurant at around 1 a.m. on Friday, April 15, when she was assaulted by a Latino man she believes wanted to steal her purse. He stabbed her once in the abdomen, McConnell says.
At some point, an unknown man believed to be a good samaritan passerby drove the victim to the hospital, but left without identifying himself, McConnell says. “We have no idea who this guy was,” McConnell says.
Police became aware of the stabbing when hospital personnel called them, McConnell says.
The victim was initially in serious but stable condition, and required surgery, he says. “The last time we attempted to interview her, she was still sedated,” he says.
McConnell says police are awaiting her release so they can take her around to help them identify her whereabouts at the time of the stabbing.
