RBR ATHLETE COLLAPSES AND DIES

By JOHN T. WARD

For the second time this school year, Red Bank Regional has been rocked by the sudden death of a student.

Senior Albert Martin, 17, of Red Bank collapsed while playing in a scrimmage game at RBR against Point Pleasant Beach High Monday afternoon and died a short time later at a hospital, according to unconfirmed accounts.

School spokeswoman Marrianne Kligman confirmed Martin’s death.

Here’s the full announcement:

It is with incredible sadness that we report the loss of Red Bank Regional (RBR) senior and varsity basketball player, Albert Martin, who collapsed while playing basketball on Monday, December 3. Albert was rushed to the hospital where he died shortly thereafter. Our collective heart breaks for his family, friends and teammates and the entire RBR community. RBR’s counselors and crisis management team will be available for all students and staff who seek these services.

The scrimmage was scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m., and Martin collapsed early in the second quarter, Kligman said. An unconfirmed comment on Twitter said Martin played six minutes in the first period.

An online profile says Martin was six-foot-three and played on the varsity football team as an outside linebacker and defensive tackle.

In September, senior Riyadhna Farrow died suddenly at her home in Red Bank. There was no foul play involved, authorities said.
