It hasn’t exactly scorched the box office, and you didn’t see it sweep Sunday night’s Academy Awards. But in the parlance of the Hollywood pitch, Consumed has it all: a mystery you can sink your teeth into, a take-charge female protagonist, a sick kid, a race against time, shadowy conspiracies, and the kind of global armageddon scenario that’s a cornerstone of the modern movie blockbuster.
The threat in this case comes from the insidious presence in food of Genetically Modified Organisms, and when the dramatic feature by director Daryl Wein comes to Red Bank’s Bow Tie Cinemas for a one-time screening on Wednesday, it will make no bones about its anti-GMO stance, and pull no punches about its point of view.
The film stars co-writer/co-producer Zoe Lister-Jones as a midwestern single mom whose attempts to get to the root of her son’s baffling illness send her on a journey into the darker recesses of the nation’s breadbasket.
It’s an adventure that pits the working class waitress-turned-sleuth against a big agribusiness concern that may have suppressed some potentially devastating findings about the nation’s food supply. Interwoven with the main storyline are subplots about “an organic farmer in danger of losing his farm, the CEO of a biotechnology corporation trying to save the world, two scientists on the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-cop caught in the middle of it all.”
Danny Glover and Anthony Edwards co-star with Griffin Dunne (Scorsese’s After Hours) and Victor Garber (currently on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), in the film that saw its premiere at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival.
