LINCROFT: GUN REPORT PROMPTS LOCKDOWN

By JOHN T. WARD

hot-topic_03-220x138-2130637Conflicting reports of an armed person at Brookdale Community College led to a brief lockdown of the Lincroft campus Wednesday evening, according to several news organizations.

According to New Jersey 101.5, the lockdown was triggered when one student reported that another had walked onto the campus carrying a BB gun.

The Asbury Park Press reported, however, that “one student threatened another student,” leading to the shelter-in-place lockdown order being issued by text at 6:45 p.m.

News 12 New Jersey, meanwhile, reported that “the incident started off campus when a student driving noticed someone in a car next to him who appeared to have a gun on the steering wheel.”

From NJ 101.5:

Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Spokesperson Charlie Webster said the incident actually began off campus when two students were walking toward the school. Webster said one student noticed that the other student was carrying the gun. When they arrived on campus, the student alerted Brookdale Police who quickly located the male and took him into custody, Webster said.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the male student with the BB gun. Webster said the student did not make any threats toward the school or members of the Brookdale community.

In a text message sent to students and alumni at about 7 p.m., the college said “the situation that caused the lockdown of the Lincroft campus has been resolved. There is no further threat to the campus community. Police will clear each building on the Lincroft campus in person.”
