The work of watercolorist Michael Scherfen, whose study of the Sandy Hook Lifesaving Station is seen here, is showcased in a special art event at Middletown’s Old Stone Church. Metalsmith Frederick Marshall, an example of whose work is seen below, keynotes a new series of Visiting Artist presentations at Brookdale Community College.
Some artsy occurrences, from now through the week’s end, in and around the Greater Red Bank Green in the days and nights ahead…
The new academic year at Brookdale Community College signals the start of another slate of events in the Visiting Artist program, now in its fourth season on the Lincroft campus.
Normally hosted in the evening hours, the series returns Thursday with a unique noontime presentation that spotlights the work of jewelry designer and metalsmith Frederick Marshall. The public is welcome as the Montclair-based artist and educator drops in at the school’s Center for Visual Arts (CVA) Gallery, for a discussion of his artistic process that spotlights examples of his award-winning work in sterling silver, brass and 22-karat gold.
Marshall will also host an interactive workshop with Brookdale visual art students following the presentation, and his creations — as well as the work of other 2016 visiting artists — will remain on display in the CVA Gallery through November 23. Parking in Lot 2 is recommended for the special “lunchtime” event (for which lunch is not provided, although attendees are welcome to bring their own), and further info can be had by calling (732) 224-2520 or emailing [email protected]. Then read on for more artsy occurrences, from now through the week’s end.

As one of the most picturesque of the many historic houses of worship in the local area, Middletown’s All Saints’ Memorial Church (the “Old Stone Church” at the crossroads of Navesink and Monmouth Avenues) has served pleasingly as a host venue for live theater, chamber concerts, lectures and other cultural offerings. Beginning Friday and continuing through the coming weekend, the church adds “art gallery” to its story, as it welcomes the public to a special art show that kicks off with a wine-and-cheese reception between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m.
Spotlighted is a one-man exhibit of works by local artist Michael Scherfen, a watercolorist whose depictions of Shore area coastal landmarks have been featured (and scored awards) in such events as the annual Canterbury Art Show in Rumson. Scherfen will unveil a never-before- displayed three-piece panoramic scene of the All Saints’ campus for the occasion, with the paintings remaining on exhibit November 5 (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and November 6 (12 to 4 p.m.). There’s no charge to attend, and more info can be had by calling (732) 291-0214.

If it’s the first week of November in downtown Red Bank, it must be time for an event that’s quietly become a cultural tradition of long standing. Back for its 30th edition at the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, the artist collective’s annual Juried Exhibition kicks off with a public-welcome, refreshments-served reception this Saturday between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.
A smorgasbord of works by member creatives, representing a variety of media, will be on display in the group show whose guest judge for 2016 is Anne Wheeler, assistant curator at the Guggenheim Museum of Art. The show continues through November 26 during regular gallery hours (Tuesday thru Saturday, from 12 to 4 p.m.).

For its November 2016 installation, the venerable Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury offers “something completely different:” a fundraiser solo show, presented under the name “This Too Shall Pass,” by member artist Paul Hansen that offers an opportunity to “purchase” any of a selection of never-before-exhibited paintings, with the caveat that each sale represents a donation to the Guild, for a temporary work (painted directly on the walls of the gallery) that will cease to exist at the conclusion of the exhibition.
The AllGood section of redbankgreen has the details here, on the event that begins with a reception on Sunday.
