RED BANK: HIGH VOLTAGE “TRIP” CAUSED BRIEF OUTAGE

UPDATE 12:25 PM MONDAY: A JCP&L spokesman said in an email “We had a transmission (high-voltage) trip that affected customers in the Red Bank, Fair Haven and Eatontown areas. It was a short duration outage for most – less than 10 minutes.”

A  transmission trip is defined as: when the circuit breakers in a high-voltage electricity transmission system disconnect or “trip” very quickly. This is a normal occurrence and is a safety mechanism that shuts down power to one or more systems to prevent a more serious problem.

Authorities were working to determine the cause of a brief power outage in parts of Red Bank Sunday night while larger numbers of customers remained out of power in towns south of the borough.

As of 10:16 pm Jersey Central Power and Light’s online outage map indicated a confirmed outage affecting more than 2,000 customers in two areas around Shrewsbury and Eatontown. There were also large numbers of reported outages in and around Red Bank. Many people took to social and reported seeing a flash and hearing a loud sound followed by brief power outages lasting a few seconds up to ten minutes or longer.

By 10:36 pm most of the outages and reports of outages on the map had been removed, indicating power had been restored.

Red Bank Fire Department Chief Bobby Holiday said the location of the problem’s origin remained unknown. Red Bank Police Chief Mike Frazee also said there was no information or any reports about the outages being related to any incident in Red Bank.
