Is your Mom from the disco generation or just a lover of great R&B? How’s this for an early Mother’s Day present: a pre-Mother’s Day sit-down with the great Melba Moore.
The T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center will host a VIP Meet & Greet Fundraiser with the Tony Award winner and four-time Grammy-nominated R&B sensation, May 9, at 3 PM.
Tickets are $50 with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Fortune Cultural Center. Light refreshments will be served and Moore’s recent memoir “This Is It: Marvelous and Getting Better,” with Kevin E. Taylor is included.
At 4:30 PM, Moore will be in conversation with Gilda Rogers, Executive Director of the Fortune Cultural Center, about her life and new book. This portion of the event is free and open to the public, to be followed by a book signing.
Moore graduated from Arts High School in Newark, New Jersey, and furthered her education at Montclair State University. She was the first Black woman to replace a white woman, actress, Diane Keaton, in a leading role in the original 1968 production of
Hair.
Moore won a Tony-Award for her role in “Purlie,” as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, for her work in theater.
“Moore is an American treasure and with over 50 years in the entertainment business she’s still standing,” a press release from the cultural center reads.
“Melba Moore’s music is an important part of the soundtrack of my life,” said Gilda Rogers, Executive Director of the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center. “You Stepped Into My Life” and “Lean On Me” are just a couple of my classic favorites.
