Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was taken out of the window of a car stopped on the Newman Springs Road Bridge over the Swimming River. The car was in park due to a long standstill for some unexplained delay and the Wheremaster took advantage of a unique vantage point right up against the metal railings with the water flowing below.
We looked through some old archives looking for some history of this bridge and didn’t find much. Most notably, we did find some old maps that listed the name of the creek as Hop Brook. When it became the Swimming River, I don’t know, but that was a bad decision. Hop Brook sounds better. And it’s not really a river. That’s always bugged me.
A small bit of water was included in the shot as a visual cue to help Wheresters narrow it down to one of the three bridges that carry traffic into Red Bank.
More than one person took more than one crack at this one, changing their original guess with follow-up emails. We had one person incorrectly guessing it was Cooper’s Bridge (Route 35) and several guessing Hubbard’s Bridge (Front Street).
Sandra Talarico nailed it for the same reason we took the picture in the first place: she’s used to sitting in traffic at that spot and staring at the metal guardrails. It’s also a good opportunity to look for bald eagles flying overheard.
Bill Fraser questioned whether this location is officially Red Bank. Maps show the dividing line between Middletown and Red Bank in the middle of the river and we were closer to the Red Bank side, so we’re counting it as legit.
