Members of the Red Bank volunteer fire department helped a kayaker who ran aground in the mud flats as the tide dropped in the Swimming River Sunday.
According to an RBFD Facebook post, Deputy Chiefs Brett MacDonald, Scott Calabrese, and Members of the Marine Unit received a call of a person. stranded in a kayak near the foot of Locust Avenue.
“With the assistance of Red Bank Marina’s Steve and Chris Remaley, the person was removed from the low-tide mud shoreline by Chris Remaley. Chris made a tethered Bridge system with multiple kayaks to bring the person to safety.” Chris Remaley is also a member of RBFD.
The mud in that area is very soft and a person trying to walk on it can sink in.
Your reporter knows this from first-person experience, from the first time he took his paddleboard out behind the primary school and his fin hit the mud flat sending him flying face-first into the mud.
