FORMER BOROUGH POLICE CHIEF DIES

William Patterson, who led the Red Bank Police Department as chief, has died, according to an obituary in today’s Asbury Park Press.

William F. Patterson, Jr., age 85, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2009 at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ. Born in Phalanx, NJ, William moved to Red Bank, where he resided most of his life. He was a Red Bank High School graduate and then served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the 2nd Armor Division where he received a purple heart. He was a member of the Red Bank Police Department since 1946, and retired as Chief of Police in 1990.

He was predeceased by his parents, William F. and Eva Patterson, his wife Harriett Patterson, who died in 2001, his brother Vernon Patterson and two sisters, Eve Tibbals and Pauline Fehlhaber.

William will be deeply missed by his son, Todd Patterson of Red Bank; his daughters, Lyn Patterson of Red Bank; Jill Hoffmann and her husband Thomas of Rumson; Dale Gornik and her husband Richard of Oceanport; Wendy Turnock and her husband Wade of Little Silver; his brother Robert Patterson of Oceanport; his sister Dorothy Ball of Red Bank and his 4 grandchildren, Jacqueline and Samantha Hoffmann, and Christopher and Patrick Gornik.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 19, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ. A Memorial Service will held on Friday, February 20, 11am at the Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Parker Family Health Center, 211 Shrewsbury Avenue, Red Bank, NJ 07701.
