FIRE PREVENTION EXPO SLATED SUNDAY

Elm_fireRed Bank firefighters responded quickly to a house fire on Elm Place fire in April.

The Red Bank Volunteer Fire Department will host its eighth annual fire-prevention expo and barbecue in the White Street municipal lot next Sunday from 11a to 3p.

All food and refreshments will be free.

The department plans a host of safety demonstrations involving various apparatus, including a 40-foot-long “smoke house” trailer on loan from the Monmouth County Fire Prevention and Protection Association.

According to to Deputy Fire Marshall Tommy Welsh, the trainer is “designed to teach children as well as adults fire prevention in the home, everything from kitchen safety to hurricane preparedness.”

Via email, Welsh runs down some of the expo’s features:

The trailer is equipped with state-of-the-art A/V equipment as well as no- toxic simulated smoke. It has a kitchen and a bedroom mock up as well as a area were we will be able to have a fully contained fire that will allow the audience to witness the effectiveness of fire sprinklers from outside of the trailer.

We will also be demonstrating how our Thermal Imaging cameras work in a custom enclosed tent filled with non toxic simulated smoke.

We will be demonstrating different firematic techniques such as vehicle extrication and other specialty equipment such as Haz-Mat operations.

We will have a Stop, Drop, and Roll station for the children, as well as a little house with hinged widows with fire painted on them that the children can knock down with a real fire hose.(weather permitted).

A live fire demonstration of proper fire extinguisher use will be included as well as other exciting static displays of various equipment

We will have many give a ways for children and adults to take home to remind them of fire safety.

And of course we will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs for free while supplies last.

The rain date for the event is Oct. 19.
