Donald Castleman, the husband of Little Silver Mayor Suzanne Castleman, passed away at his home Tuesday, according to an obituary in the Asbury Park Press.

The cause of his death was not reported in the obituary.

At 82 years old, Castleman’s death came just two months before the couple would have celebrated their 55th anniversary.

From the Press obit:

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and the son of Godwin M. and Eleanor B. Castleman. He graduated from Brooklyn Poly Prep in 1947. Don also graduated from Princeton University in 1951 with a B.A. degree in Economics. While at Princeton, he was a member of the Charter Club. He served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his years of military service, he joined Bankers Trust Company in 1954, where he remained throughout his entire career. He retired from Bankers Trust Company as a Managing Director. In July of 1956, Don married the former Suzanne Stephens of Little Silver. This coming July, they would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Don served as a member of the Board of Education, where he was later elected president. He was a member of the Rumson Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf with his buddies. He was also a member of the Sea Bright Beach Club.

Castleman is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Castleman-Halpin and Anne Connell, and her husband, Daniel; a sister, Sally Eckerson and her husband, Homer; four grandchildren; and his wife, Suzanne, known well throughout town as “Mayor Suzy.”

Earlier this year, Suzanne Castleman, who’s served as mayor since 1994 and has held public office since 1984, announced she would not run for another term as mayor in this November’s election. The reason, she told several media outlets, was to spend more time at home with her family.
