COPS: SUSPECT’S BROTHER HAD HAND IN IT

Authorities have now arrested the brother of an Eatontown man already in custody on suspicion they were both involved in the June 4 robbery of a Bank of America branch in Middletown, the Asbury Park Press reported Friday.

Christopher A. Greenfield, 43, of Eatontown, was charged with robbery, theft and conspiracy to commit robbery on Thursday, prosecutors said.

Police had stopped him within an hour of the robbery, but it took another eight days to build the case against him, police said.

The arrest came five days after his brother, Glen Greenfield, 45, was arrested in Long Pond, Pa., where authorities said he fled after the robbery.

Police said Glenn Greenfield entered the Bank of America on Highway 35, and displayed a handwritten note ordering the teller to provide an undisclosed amount of money.

After grabbing the cash, he drove off, police said.

Investigators now say he drove a short distance and then switched cars with his brother.

Shortly thereafter, police stopped Christopher Greenfield while he was driving the car that had been used in the robbery, Valentin said.

“Christopher A. Greenfield purposely provided assistance to his brother both prior and subsequent to the commission of the crime,” Valentin said. “He did so with full knowledge of his brother’s intentions and actions.”

Glenn Greenfield is being held without bail at the Monroe County Correctional Facility in Snydersville, Pa.

A scheduled extradition hearing to return him to New Jersey was not held on Thursday, [Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis] Valentin said.

No word yet on whether Christopher Greenfield is the one-armed man police said they’d apprehended in Eatontown minutes after the robbery.

In a story that ran in Sunday’s edition of the Press, authorities say Monmouth County has had six bank robberies since May 12, a spate that’s counter to the overall trend statewide, where bank robberies are down. Already, Monmouth County has matched its total number of bank robberies for all of 2007, the Press says.
