LOCKDOWN AT R-FH ENDS

Students at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School spent more than two hours this afternoon locked in classrooms while authorities investigated a security threat, redbankgreen has learned.

The Asbury Park Press reported that the school

entered into a 2 1/2-hour lockdown after school administrators had been notified of an online threat directed at a student, said Superintendent Peter Righi.

The online threat emanated from two locales, he said.

Students were dismissed at 2:40 p.m. under supervision from the Police Department and Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Further details on the nature of the threat were not immediately available.

Our calls to the high school administration and the police were not immediately returned.

Senior Mike Roig tells us that students were told to return to their first-period homerooms at about noon. They then spent about two and half hours in their classrooms before being released at the end of the school day, he said.

Roig said the lockdown was triggered when, “apparently, a student at R-FH received a threat via the Internet.”

He said students were later told that two people had been responsible for sending the threat, and were apprehended, though he didn’t know where.

In the interim, he said, Principal Tracy Handerhan made an announcement telling students not to use their cellphones, and that the school was in lockdown mode.

“To be honest, the atmosphere was light — in fact, there was a good amount of goofing around” in his homeroom, Roig said. But after one period, “It became clear that it wasn’t a drill, and in fact, Mrs. Handerhan made another announcement that it was not a drill.”
