FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19
Heads Up for 180
October is the time for womens awareness issues; breast cancer and domestic violence share the month. At 180 Turning Lives Around, volunteers hope to give purple its due in the midst of so much pink.
Purple is the color that signifies the bruises and shame that come from abuse inflicted by someone that you love and trust, said Barbara Lovell-Napoli, assistant director of development at 180. Monmouth County has the second-highest incidence of domestic violence in New Jersey, Lovell-Napoli said, and the most effective tool for prevention is awareness.
Each year, former clients put on a gallery show based on 180’s art therapy program. For 2012, its called Heads Up! and opens tonight at U Gallery. On display through October 24 a will be artwork from survivors and artists who support 180s mission.
These pieces tell some compelling stories and are beautiful in their resolve and courageousness,” said Lovell-Napoli. The opening reception is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. 80 Broad Street, Red Bank.
Homecoming Carnival at RFHRHS
Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School will celebrate its football homecoming with a fun addition to the tradition. This year will feature a carnival on the school’s upper field. A $5 fee gets one access to a moon bounce, obstacle course, basketball challenge, joust, wrecking ball, and Euro bungee. The fee also includes BBQ food selections, glitter and henna tattoo artists, live performances by student bands, a balloon artist, stilt walker, and more. The carnival takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. before the RFH football team takes on Monsignor Donovan at 7 p.m.. 74 Ridge Road, Rumson.
Spooky Tales and Ghosts of Historic Fort Hancock
Join the American Littoral Society for a walk around Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook, which is rumored to be haunted. Bring flashlights; this event takes place in dimming light between 6-8:30 p.m. Admission is free. Complimentary cookies and cider afterward in building 18 of Officers Row. 18 Hartshorne Drive #1, Sandy Hook.
Haunted Theater at Brookdale Community College
Dubbed the live AAAGGH!tion scary walk-through, the Haunted Theater created by the Brookdale Theater Club is back at the Lincroft campus Performing Arts Center for six nights of blood-drenched diorama and poppin’ fresh fear mongering. Admission is $8 ($5 for BCC students). Scaring runs from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Newman Springs Road, Lincroft.
Red Bank Walking Lantern Ghost Tours
Jersey Shore Ghost Tours leads guided tours of the borough’s most historical haunts every Friday night through Halloween. Tickets are sold at 8 p.m. in front of the Dublin House: $10 for kids 10 and under, $12 for all others. Tours depart at 8:30. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20
River Read Series at Red Bank Public Library
John Petrolino and Peter Murphy will be featured in this monthly free poetry slam event at the Red Bank Public Library. From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., guest artists will be spotlighted, along with the famous River Read open mic. Admission is free. 84 West Front Street, Red Bank.
Free Concert at the Red Bank Conservatory
Red Bank’s Monmouth Conservatory of Music will host a free concert of classical pieces by the acclaimed duo of Katha Zin (violin) and Iliya Filshtinsky (piano) at 4 p.m. Following immediately after, a Meet the Artists reception with refreshments. Admission is free. 50 White Street, Red Bank.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21
Red Bank Halloween Parade
Revelers and floats begin assembling at 1 p.m. on East Bergen Place between Hudson Avenue and South Street for Red Banks annual Halloween Parade, now in its sixty-fifth year. The march starts an hour later, heading up Broad Street and over to the White Street municipal parking lot for costume judging and goodie-giveaways.
Traditional Irish Seisiun at the Dub
Presented on the first and third Sunday of every month is Irish Open Mic Night, upstairs at the Dublin House starting at 8 p.m. 30 Monmouth Street, Red Bank.
