Press release from Sickles Market

The Battle of the Class Sandwiches has been decided — and the winner of the special fundraising competition, sponsored by the Red Bank Regional High School District and Sickles Market, is the Junior Class.

It was a hard-fought but decisive win for the RBR Juniors, with their top-selling sandwich creation, “The Fiesta ’15,” topping the sales sweepstakes with 502 sandwiches sold. The winning sandwich is described as“Savory grilled chicken and Monterey Jack cheese paired with an explosion of southwestern flavors including fresh avocado, Sickles’ Own black bean salsa and a kick of chipotle ranch dressing, all rolled up into a sundried tomato wrap.”

The announcement of the winner was made at a congratulatory luncheon at RBR on Monday, June 16. The Senior Class 2014 placed second with “The Wild Buc” (429 sold); the Sophomore Class of 2016 placed third with “The Sweet ’16” (370 sold) and the Freshmen Class of 2017 finished fourth with “The Savory ‘17” (238 sold).

A fundraising vehicle for the individual classes and the RBR Education Foundation, the Battle of the Sandwiches saw the four high school classes create and name their own sandwiches in October 2013, after which the competing creations were placed on the regular sandwich menu at Sickles Market. Each class was given the opportunity to promote their sandwich with a Buy One Get One Free Day at Sickles Market, and to demo their sandwich for customers. In addition, Sickles Market and RBR e-blasted the battle and posted on Facebook several times during each class month. For every sandwich sold at Sickles, $1 was donated to RBR, as well as to the individual classes.

In a prepared statement class advisors Kristy Finck and Denise Barrett wrote:“What we have seen consistently over the past three years is that students in the Class of 2015 have a lot of enthusiasm for everything they do, and the Battle of the Sandwiches contest is no exception. We developed the idea for the sandwich (originally called the Freshman Fiesta), because we felt that it was a flavor profile that was well liked, but missing from Sickles’ menu. We had a lot of success with it two years ago, and we were happy to use it again this year after renaming it the Fiesta ’15. We LOVE the sandwich, and we’re happy that others do too. We are thrilled about winning the competition this year, and grateful to the staff at Sickles Market for giving us the opportunity to fundraise in such a fun way!”

The classes will utilize the funds to defray expenses for activities such such as prom costs and senior picnic. The RBR Education Foundation provides grants to fund educational resources and programs for RBR students.

“We always enjoy endeavors involving our community and our school districts,” said Bob Sickles, third generation owner of Sickles Market. “We enjoy giving students an opportunity to learn some business skills like how to promote their sandwich. All the sandwiches are really very good, and we congratulate the Junior Class!”
