SANDY HOOK: LEASE A BIT OF HISTORY

ft-hancock-500x327-5973226Six historic buildings in the Fort Hancock area of Sandy Hook are being opened up to leasing for multiple uses during an open house this Sunday.

hot-topic_03-220x138-2130637Looking to lease a unique and historic Jersey Shore property, equipped with billion-dollar waterfront view, with an eye toward preserving it as a residence, nonprofit facility or even a bed-and-breakfast?

The Sandy Hook stewards of the Gateway National Recreation Area have an opportunity for you.

This Sunday, the Fort Hancock 21st Century Federal Advisory Committee hosts an open house  for potential leaseholders at the Post Chapel building at the Fort Hancock/ Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark.

From 1 to 3 pm, it’s an unprecedented chance to become part of a pilot endeavor designed to spur the Fort’s “reawakening into the vital, vibrant community that existed here for decades.”

Six of the old bayside homes on the former Officers’ Row are being made available for this “adaptive reuse” program, with three Requests for Proposal being solicited through April 17 under the plan to maintain two buildings as private residences, two as bed-and-breakfast guest facilities, and two as headquarters for various not-for-profits.

Having been vacant for many years, the residences offer spectacular sunset panoramas and little more at the moment — but those who are serious about partnering with park management and the 21st Century Committee in this effort will be able to make a walkthrough inspection of some of the properties, between 2 and 3 pm.

Since being deactivated more than 40 years ago, the fort buildings at the north end of the Hook have weathered epic storms; hosted history buffs, birdwatchers, sightseers and ghost hunters; housed organizations like the American Littoral Society, and played neighbor to such facilities as the M.A.S.T. High School and the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center.

Take it here for information about upcoming public programs at Gateway National Recreation Area — and here to join the conversation on Facebook.
