Citing last weekend’s bombing spree in Seaside Heights, New York City and Elizabeth, school officials have imposed new restrictions at Borden Stadium, officials said in a letter sent to community members Thursday.

A Rumson-Fair Haven Regional senior wants the school to drop a ban on student use of cellphones in school hallways between classes.

James Rue, 17, of Fair Haven, presented the school’s board of education with a petition Tuesday night calling for changes to the policy, which administrators said is being enforced anew after some unintended laxity.

Students, however, contend the crackdown was triggered by an incident last year in which a male student took “upskirt” videos of female students in stairwells without their knowledge.

Five months after former Rumson-Fair Haven Regional football coach Bryan Batchler was cleared of criminal wrongdoing over alleged inappropriate contact with a student, several dozen supporters demanded Tuesday night that he be reinstated.

Batchler, who has been on paid administrative leave from teaching for eight months and was stripped of his coaching job in February, told redbankgreen that Superintendent Pete Righi is now trying to oust him, via a tenure-revocation case, from the job he’s held since 2008.  Read More »

Ousted Rumson-Fair Haven football coach Bryan Batchler has been cleared of criminal wrongdoing for what his attorney said were allegations of an inappropriate relationship with student.

“The evidence was insufficient to support criminal charges,”acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said in a prepared statement reported by the Asbury Park Press  Wednesday. “However, we referred the matter to the New Jersey Department of Education Investigations Unit for any administrative investigation or other action within their jurisdiction to conduct.”

“Essentially, Coach Batchler was falsely accused of criminal conduct and the prosecutor’s office didn’t even find that there was probable cause to believe that any criminal conduct was committed,” Batchler’s attorney, Mitch Ansell, said in a statement.

Jerry Schulte, who spent the last decade running the defense for the high-achieving Bulldogs, was chosen by the board to replace Bryan Batchler, who was put on administrative leave in December for unexplained reasons and was later removed as coach.

Batchler, who led the Bulldogs to their third consecutive state sectional title with a win over Red Bank Regional on December 5, was placed on leave by Superintendent Pete Righi just nine days later. Now, however, the school needs to find a coach for the upcoming season, Righi said in a prepared statement Tuesday.

WITH THIRD TITLE, R-FH ENDS RBR’S DREAM

Defense carried the day as Rumson-Fair Haven Regional defeated Red Bank Regional 21-0 for the NJSIAA Central Group 3 championship at Rutgers in Piscataway Saturday night.

On the offensive side, Bulldogs running back Bryan Hess scored two touchdowns and quarterback Michael O’Connor scored the third in what O’Connor later told Shore Sports Zone was a “ground and pound” campaign. But the Dawg defense also pounded the Bucs, keeping star wide receiver Sadiq Palmer out of the end zone and forcing turnovers.

For the Bulldogs, it was the third straight state championship; for the Bucs, the end of an improbable 11-0 season as they tried to capture their first state title since 1975. Shore Sports Zone was there to capture all the highlights. (Video courtesy of Shore Sports Zone)

ON THE GREEN: MAYORS HAVE FUR IN THIS ONE

The Battle of Ridge Road will pit maroon against purple in a high-stakes football game between Red Bank Regional and Rumson-Fair Haven Regional high schools this weekend.

But in the aftermath, the mayors of at least two towns will end up dressed dressed in electric green.

That’s because the top elected officials in Fair Haven, Rumson, Little Silver, Red Bank and Shrewsbury have a group wager on the outcome of the NJSIAA Central Group 3 championship game  between the undefeated RBR Buccaneers (11-0) and the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional Bulldogs (9-2): those from the sending towns of the losing team must dress up as the Grinch at a Holiday Express event, Little Silver Mayor Bob Neff tells redbankgreen.

just_in1Heading into a championship football game early next month and hoping to “avert a tragedy,” Red Bank Regional officials are warning students about drug and alcohol use following several incidents of severe intoxication at home games this season.

In a “letter to parents” posted on Twitter by principal Risa Clay and on the school website late Tuesday afternoon, interim Superintendent Thomas Pagano wrote that Little Silver police, as well as school security personnel and administrators “have had to intervene and assist intoxicated students who had consumed alcohol either prior to or during football games on school grounds” this season.
