Recently, the Red Bank Regional High School Buc Backer Foundation held its 15th annual induction of Distinguished Alumni into its Hall of Fame. RBR Principal Risa Clay welcomed the inductees and their families, explaining that “this event has become a wonderful tradition.  It combines the occasion to learn more about the rich history of our school and it gives us an opportunity to honor our past heritage.”

This year’s inductees included award-winning psychiatric researcher Janice A. Egeland, Ph.D. (Class of 1952); otolaryngologist and inventor Dr. S. Thomas Westerman (Class of 1952); Red Bank businessman and community leader Dean Ross (Class of 1969); physician and professor Dr. Lindsay Maggio (Class of 1998); financial advisor, coach and collegiate star athlete Tahj J. Holden (Class of 1999), and Army Troop Commander, West Point graduate and athlete CPT Bo Olsen (Class of 2004).

RBR WRITERS GO FOR GOLD, SILVER

NationalwinnersRed Bank Regional Creative Writing teacher Dr. Gretna Wilkinson  is pictured at center with RBR students Mya Nunnaly and Liv Winnicki. Mya and Liv were respectively winners of National Gold and Silver Medals in the annual Scholastic Art Awards, with Mya also winning a prestigious Gedenk Award, seeing her poem published in the competition’s 2015 National Catalog, and meeting both Chelsea Clinton and Whoopi Goldberg at the Carnegie Hall ceremony.

One of the most popular Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) programs at Red Bank Regional High School is Creative Writing. Every year, Dr. Gretna Wilkinson’s students make her proud at the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and this year was no exception, with 32 RBR Creative Writing Majors winning three dozen gold and silver medals, as well as 16 Honorable Mentions at the regional level.

On Friday, April 25, the Red Bank Regional Education Foundation (RBREF) held its 2014 Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Red Bank Regional High School. Entering the Hall of Fame this year were Greg Montgomery (Class of 1983), former NFL Football Player & Mental Health Advocate; Tiffaney M. Harris (Class of 1989), longtime Red Bank School District staff member and consummate community volunteer ; Dr. James Burden, D.M.D. (Class of 1991), mobile dentist to the elderly and infirm; and Brian Steckroth (Class of 1998), US Naval Academy Graduate, All-American and decorated Iraqi War Veteran. This year’s faculty honoree was Seymour Siegler, Ed.D. Red Bank High School biology teacher and guidance counselor (1957-1972), and co-founder of the Holocaust Museum at Brookdale Community College.

“The selection criterion for induction into the Hall of Fame involves being a role model for our current students,” Jacqueline Caruso Smith, committee chairperson for the event, informed the audience. “Whether someone attended our school 50 or 15 years ago or was a faculty member, they must have distinguished themselves by making some unique contribution in their careers and served their communities with honor and significant commitment.”
