SHREWSBURY: ‘FOOD FOR FINES’ FORGIVES

As the Monmouth County Library‘s April Food Drive enters its second full week, those who donate will have the opportunity to get a little something back in recognition of their generosity, when the ‘Food for Fines’ program affords the opportunity for anyone with an outstanding balance for overdue books to have charges forgiven in return for a donation.

Collection bins are in place at the Eastern Branch Library in Shrewsbury and other Monmouth County locations to accept non-perishable product donations. The drive is part of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders partnership with the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties to help alleviate hunger.

RUMSON: BOWL BENEFIT, BOOK DRIVE AT RFH

On Thursday, March 2, the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser hosted by Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School will be held in the school’s Cafeteria from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

A benefit for the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, Empty Bowls is named for the situation faced by local families struggling to put food on the table. Each year the event is open to the public and features beautiful original artwork in the form of colorful bowls created by RFH ceramics students.

RBR LEADERS MEDAL IN ANNUAL CONFERENCE

fcclaofficialPictured  are the fifteen Red Bank Regional High School students who competed in last month’s 2016 Family Career Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Fall Leadership Conference in Edison. RBR earned two gold, two silver and three bronze awards in categories that included baking, fashion, ecological picture frame and banner creations, and community service, for which the students conducted a food drive at an RBR football game which collected over 500 pounds of food for the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Ask Bobby Bandiera and he’ll probably tell you that a dose of charitable spirit is more important than ever in the final countdown to Christmas and Hanukkah — and that the day-to-day survival of our neediest neighbors doesn’t take a holiday break when the rest of the community settles into its family traditions.

RBR TACKLES HUNGER AT THE BIG GAME

Anyone attending the game will receive free admittance if they bring non-perishable food  items at the game entrance.

A new tradition will meet the old, as football fans who donate a non-perishable food item will receive free admission to the football game between Red Bank Regional High School and Long Branch High School this Thanksgiving. The traditional matchup — one of the longest-running in the Shore area — will take place on Thanksgiving Day, November 26. Kickoff is at 10 am at RBR, and all who donate—parents, children, students, RBR fans, Long Branch fans — will get in for free.

All the food collected will be donated to the Salvation Army of Red Bank, an organization that assists people in over 30 area towns, explained English teacher Cassandra Dorn, who helped initiate RBR’s fifth Football Food Drive.

RED BANK: A CUT FOR CHARITY

The salon at 15-A Wikoff Place collected and delivered over 100 pounds of food, and for the remainder of the month will be donating $5 from every salon service to the Neptune-based charity.

It’s like something straight out of a Busby Berkeley musical: farm girl comes to the big city; goes from unknown to Broadway lead, and back to struggling trouper. Takes her career into her own hands by calling up her fellow under-employed ladies of the stage and crafting “an all-female revue with a sexy rock n’ roll twist” — one that becomes an international touring sensation, from here to such faraway whistle-stops as China and Dubai. Call it The Broadway Dolls and you’ve got a surefire hit.

Created by and co-starring former Hairspray lead Hollie Howard, the project known as Broadway’s Original Girl Group brings its mix of vintage showtunes, 60s girl group oldies and 21st century radio pop to Red Bank’s historic Molly Pitcher Inn on Monday, September 22 for  “A Taste of Broadway on the Promenade,” a gala dedicated to the benefit of an array of locally based charities — and spotlighting the wares of several star-quality staples of the Monmouth County culinary landscape.

The officers of Navesink Business Group have announced that tickets are on sale for the organization’s annual Waves of Support fundraising gala benefitting locally based charities.

Presented under the theme “A Taste of Broadway on the Promenade,” this year’s event will take place on Monday, September 22, 2014, at the historic Molly Pitcher Inn. The evening begins with cocktails at 6 pm, and includes a silent auction, spectacular entertainment, and a five-course dinner featuring selections from some stars of Monmouth County’s culinary landscape.

Headlining the evening’s entertainment will be a performance by The Broadway Dolls, the dynamic “girl group” founded by Hollie Howard, and featuring cast members from such Broadway hits as Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages and Jersey Boys.

Dinner will include hors d’oeuvres and several courses prepared by some of Monmouth County’s top dining spots, among them Ama Ristorante, Danny’s Steak House, David Burke Fromagerie, Soul Kitchen, Teak, The Bistro, The Cheese Cave and Zoe, in addition the executive chefs from The Molly Pitcher Inn and The Oyster Point Hotel.

TOP TAGGERS AIM AEROSOLS AGAINST HUNGER

Twelve aerosol artists and art collectives from all over the region have been invited to take part in the annual Jersey Shore Aerosol Art Battle Against Hunger, a family-friendly afternoon of juried, live-paint graffiti art to benefit the Foodbank of Monmouth & Ocean.

Featuring the participation of three special guest artist-judges — the spraycan specialists known as Demer, Rain and Kasso — the event takes place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday, October 13, at Colorest Art Supplies in Red Bank.
