Red Bank Regional announces that Harry Jain, 17, of Red Bank was named a National Merit Semi Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Also named as commended scholars are: Willow Martin, 16, of Little Silver; Victoria Lloyd, 17, of Little Silver, Samuel Zatorski, 18, of Red Bank, and Stephen (Ford) Zacks, 18, of Red Bank.

RBR BOARD HONORS COMMENDED SCHOLARS

Joseph Ferguson Gabriella RecaldeRed Bank Regional seniors Joe Ferguson and Gabriella Recalde were recently recognized by the Board of Education for their honors of National Merit Commended Scholar and National Hispanic Scholar, respectively.

At its February meeting, the Red Bank Regional High School Board of Education honored a pair of RBR seniors as its commended scholars. Joseph Ferguson of Little Silver was honored as a National Merit Commended Scholar, while  Gabriela Recalde of Millstone was named as a National Hispanic Scholar (NHRP) through the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

This National Merit award is based on the commended student’s performance on the 2014 Preliminary Sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test, and represents the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014-2015 competition. The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies and celebrates students who score within the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic and Latino PSAT/NMSQT takers. Out of over 225,000 high school juniors self-identifying as Hispanic/Latino, only 5,000 are selected as NHRP Scholars.

At its board meeting on January 28, the Red Bank Regional Board of Education honored several Red Bank Regional High School seniors who were named National Merit Commended Scholars, based on the students’ performance on the 2013 Preliminary Sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test.

Commended were Ariel Balaban and Niki Buechel (both of Little Silver), as well as Mary Cassandra (Cassie) Jain of Red Bank, and Nicole Povey of Shrewsbury, all of whom represented the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2013-2014 competition.

Another Shrewsbury student, Kyla Robinson, was named a National Achievement Scholar. That program, established in 1962, recognizes the top scoring African American students on the same test. It honors the top 3 percent of the more than 160,000 students who entered the 2015 National Achievement Program.
