exit 109 plans 042215Attention Red Bank area motorists: Exit 109 of the Garden State Parkway is in line for a two-year, $60 million reconstruction,  NJ.com reports.

Work on the Lincroft interchange at Newman Springs Road won’t start until 2017, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority tells transportation writer Larry Higgs.

But the authority, which owns the Parkway, is giving commuters a first look at what’s to come – including a new “flyover” ramp from eastbound Newman Springs Road onto the northbound parkway lanes to replace the dreaded Half Mile Road jughandle – at an information session scheduled for Thursday in Middletown.

FORMER RED BANK MAYOR GUILTY OF DWI

Former Red Bank Mayor Ed McKenna was convicted of drunken driving in Tinton Falls last week over an incident in which his car was alleged to have ended up facing oncoming traffic on the Garden State Parkway last year, according to a report in the Two River Times.

TINTON FALLS: McKENNA PLEADS NOT GUILTY

Former Red Bank Mayor Ed McKenna pleaded not guilty Tuesday to drunken driving charges arising from a spin-out on the Garden State Parkway last month, the Asbury Park Press reported.

McKenna was not present for the scheduled first appearance in the matter, the Press reported, and the plea was entered on his behalf by his lawyer and associate, Ed Washburne.

FORMER RED BANK MAYOR ARRESTED FOR DWI

Former Red Bank Mayor Ed McKenna was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a one-car accident on the Garden State Parkway Monday night, State Police said Wednesday.

According to agency spokesman Sergeant Adam Grossman, McKenna was traveling northbound in the express lanes of the highway in Tinton Falls at about 9:50 p.m. when his black 2012 Mercedes sedan “traveled along the guardrail, then stopped in a position facing oncoming traffic in the right lane.”

DRUNK DRIVER: SEVEN YEARS FOR FATALITY

A 22-year-old Ocean County man was sentenced to seven years in state prison for killing a Middletown father of five in a 2011 Parkway accident, Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter Warshaw announced Friday.

Eric Periera, of Jackson Township, must serve close to six years of that term before becoming eligible for parole after he pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and other charges in connection with the April, 2011 crash.

Kevin Donnelly, a 43-year-old copy editor at the Staten Island Advance, died in the crash, which occurred when a car driven by Pereira struck the rear of Donnelly’s minivan around 11 p.m. in the southbound local lanes near mile marker 120.

RED BANK COPS IN HIGH-SPEED PURSUIT

Red Bank police abandoned a high-speed chase that took them up the Garden State Parkway nearly to the Raritan River early Friday morning, authorities say.

The  incident began at about 1:30 a.m. when a patrol officer attempted to pull over a vehicle he had seen run a stop sign in the vicinity of Linden Place and Broad Street, Captain Darren McConnell tells redbankgreen.

RACING SCANDAL SPREADS TO RED BANK

An explosive scandal alleging that New Jersey State Police led a high-speed caravan of luxury cars down the Garden State Parkway to Atlantic City last month took a twist Monday with the revelation of another such excursion in 2010.

That one, according to a report Monday by the Star-Ledger,  involved a caravan of hot cars headed to a Ferrari car show in downtown Red Bank.

PARKWAY FATALITY YIELDS DWI INDICTMENT

hot-topic rightA Garden State Parkway accident that that killed a Middletown father of five in April has led to the indictment of a Jackson man on a vehicular homicide and other charges,  Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter Warshaw announced Monday.

Eric Pereira, 20, was intoxicated, speeding and using a cellphone when he smashed into the rear of a southbound van, leading to the death of 43-year-old Kevin Donnelly, Warshaw’s office alleges.

EX CHARGED AS RED BANK WOMAN’S KILLER

Oscar Prior-Ramirez, 31, or Eatontown, was charged in the death of Viridiana Beltran-Gomez, above, according to a report that first appeared in the Asbury Park Press Saturday night. Bail was set at $1.5 million.

MIDDLETOWN MAN DIES IN PARKWAY CRASH

State police have charged an Ocean County man with drunken driving after an accident that killed a Middletown man on the Garden State Parkway Saturday night, NJ.com reported Sunday.

Kevin Donnelly, 43, died in the crash, which occurred when a car driven by Eric Pereira, 20, of Jackson struck the rear of Donnelly’s minivan around 11p in the southbound local lanes near mile marker 120, the Press reports.

NJ.com, citing State Police, says Donnelly, a father of five boys and a copy editor on the sports desk at the Staten Island Advance, was pronounced dead at the scene.
